Bitcoin 'whales' awaken after 16 years of hibernation.

One of the news stories currently attracting significant attention in the cryptocurrency community is the awakening of Bitcoin "whales" from the Satoshi Nakamoto era. In the cryptocurrency field, the term "whale" refers to wallet addresses holding more than 1,000 Bitcoin.

Wallets created before Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto disappeared from the community in April 2011 are called "Satoshi-era" Bitcoin wallets or "ancient whale" wallets.

Cointelegraph tracked blockchain data showing that a series of wallet addresses holding a total of 600 BTC, worth approximately $48 million, moved the asset on September 5th, after more than 16 years of inactivity.

Whale Alert, a blockchain transaction tracking platform, stated that the 600 BTC came from mining rewards across 12 Bitcoin blocks. However, the team said that after research, they found no connection to Satoshi Nakamoto, who is considered the father of Bitcoin.

"Based on our research, none of the 600 BTC blocks that just woke up can be linked to Satoshi," a Whale Alert spokesperson told Cointelegraph . This eases speculation surrounding the origin of the tokens previously mined by Bitcoin miners.

Whale Alert also traced the origin of all 12 rewards to Bitcoin blocks mined in March 2010. At that time, the reward per block was 50 BTC. This block reward is halved after each Bitcoin Halving. The most recent halving occurred in April 2024, when the reward price dropped from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC after each successful block mining.

Any movement of Bitcoin wallets from the Satoshi Nakamoto era attracts significant community attention because it could be a clue to one of the most mysterious questions in modern technological history: "Who is the father of Bitcoin?"

However, Whale Alert's expanded findings suggest that the identity of the alleged Satoshi Nakamoto remains a mystery. In a September 6th post on X, Whale Alert stated that seven "ancient" block rewards were examined and concluded not to have been mined by the "father" of Bitcoin.

Lookonchain, an on-chain data analytics platform, initially identified seven miner wallets that transferred 350 BTC after 16.5 years of inactivity. The team concluded that these wallets had earned rewards through mining activity in March 2010.

The Satoshi era doesn't mean Bitcoin belongs to Satoshi. The movement attracts attention partly because these coins date back to a time when Nakamoto was still actively involved in the market. The creator of Bitcoin remained involved in the project's development and communication until 2010 before gradually withdrawing, with his last known contact being in April 2011.
