Rising star Karoline Leavitt rose rapidly and was chosen by US President-elect Donald Trump as White House Press Secretary at the age of just 27.

US President-elect Donald Trump announced on November 15 that he has chosen Karoline Leavitt as White House press secretary in his incoming administration. She will then become the youngest person to hold the high-pressure position in the administration, according to AFP.

Gen Z talent

Karoline Leavitt was born in 1997 to a Catholic family in Atkinson, New Hampshire. After graduating from high school, she studied communications and political science at Saint Anselm College. During her time as a student, she worked as an intern in the White House Presidential Press Office.

Leavitt became involved with the Republican Party after Mr. Trump and his primary opponents came to her school in Manchester, New Hampshire, for a debate in 2016, an event broadcast by Fox News.

"Being one of the only conservatives on campus, they made me a running assistant for Fox News that week. I was just running around behind the scenes and that's when I decided what I wanted to do for a career," the Gen Z girl (Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012) said on a podcast.

Leavitt then wrote an op-ed for the school newspaper titled “Why Donald Trump Keeps Winning and the Media Doesn’t Get It.” In the piece, she railed against the “identity politics” that many of her peers openly supported. “I don’t believe that the color of your skin or your gender should hold you back in this country. I don’t believe that’s true. That’s the foundation of my conservative beliefs,” Leavitt said.

After graduating, Leavitt landed a job as White House Assistant Press Secretary in the final years of Trump’s first term. She then served as communications director for Rep. Elise Stefanik, Trump’s pick to be his next ambassador to the United Nations.

In 2022, she ran for the House of Representatives, becoming one of the first Gen Zers to make it through a primary but then lost to incumbent Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas.

Loyal to traditional values

Leavitt served as national press secretary for Trump’s 2024 campaign, frequently appearing at his side, including at rallies and in court appearances. In July, she took nine days of medical leave to give birth to her son.

Leavitt is a strong believer in Mr Trump's America First agenda and shares his views on traditional media outlets.

On a November 15 Fox News podcast, she said she has dedicated her campaign to fighting fake news reporters. "I hate to call them that, but it's true. There are a lot of journalists who don't care about journalism anymore, and we deal with them every day," Leavitt said.

When she ran for the House, Leavitt's campaign focused on traditional values, economic growth, and support for law enforcement. She emphasized her commitment to protecting the Second Amendment right to bear arms, lowering taxes, and opposing excessive government intervention, according to WMUR-TV.

Mr Trump described Leavitt as "smart, tough and a proven communicator". "I have great confidence that she will excel on the podium and deliver our message to the American people," Mr Trump said.

Asked to point out how Trump will be different in his next term than he has been in the past, Leavitt said the president-elect has more experience in politics. "I think he's more savvy about the deep state, the powerful interests in Washington DC, and the extent to which they're willing to go to sabotage his campaign and his success," Leavitt said.

In addition to Karoline Leavitt, Mr. Trump also chose a series of young faces for his second term cabinet. Specifically, Ms. Stefanik, born in 1984, is the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Matt Gaetz, born in 1982, was nominated for the position of Attorney General, Mr. Pete Hegseth, born in 1980, was nominated for the position of Secretary of Defense, Ms. Tulsi Gabbard, born in 1981, was nominated for the position of Director of National Intelligence. Mr. Stephen Miller, born in 1985, was a Senior Advisor in the first term and is now nominated as Homeland Security Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff of the White House for Policy.
