After morning classes at school, Le Y Thuong (in Ward 7, Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen), a student in class 11A10, Nguyen Hue High School (Tuy Hoa City) hurriedly returned home to cook for her mother.
16 years of being a support for mother
With no father and a mother with a congenital disability, Thuong was at a disadvantage compared to other children when she came to this world. She and her mother had to live with their aunt. The small attic has been their home for the past 16 years. The small amount of money from the disability allowance is the main source of income for Thuong and her mother.
For the past 16 years, Thuong has been her mother's support.
In the middle of this year, Thuong's mother, Le Thi Lan Dai (52 years old), unfortunately fell off her bike and suffered a traumatic brain injury, requiring her to be hospitalized for nearly a month. During that time, Thuong went to school and went to the hospital to take care of her mother.
Having gone through a childhood without a father's loving arms and an imperfect mother, the sense of independence and overcoming difficulties made Thuong much more mature than her age. For the past 16 years, Thuong has been a support for her mother, an excellent student at school, and a good student of her teachers.
"I usually wake up at 5:30 in the morning, this is a habit my mother taught me since I was little. I wake up early to help my mother with personal hygiene, clean the house, cook rice, and prepare for school. After school at noon, I help my mother cook and eat. In the afternoon, when there are extra classes, I prepare food for my mother. I don't attend night classes because I have to go home to take care of my mother. Luckily, the teachers love me so much that they teach me for free," Thuong confided.
Thuong uses the small kitchen corner as a study table.
Dream of university
In the middle of this year, Thuong had intended to quit school to go to work to earn money to treat her mother, but with the encouragement of her mother and teachers, she continued to go to school. She dreams of going to university and becoming a student of tourism management. But perhaps that is just a dream when there are too many things that make Thuong worry.
"It's just a dream, but how can I be away from my mother? If I'm not home, who will take care of her? The cost of college is not small," Thuong confided.
Ms. Le Thi Lan Dai burst into tears when talking about her daughter's dream. "I hope she can go to university, but our family situation is too difficult. Many nights, thinking about her, tears just flow. I can only blame myself for not giving her the conditions to develop normally like her peers," Ms. Dai said, choking up.
Many nights, Ms. Le Thi Lan Dai could not hold back her tears when thinking about her daughter's dream of going to university.
Ms. Dang Thi Hai Anh, Vice Principal of Nguyen Hue High School, said that Thuong's family situation was really difficult. When the school discovered that Thuong intended to quit school, the school, along with teachers and friends, visited her family and encouraged her to continue going to school.
"When we got home, we saw Thuong and her mother living in a small, cramped attic. The disabled mother tried her best to raise her children, so everyone was touched. At school, Thuong was always a good and well-behaved student, and the teachers loved her very much. The school supported her with 500,000 VND/month, the class teacher supported her with 200,000 VND/month and school supplies to help and encourage her to continue going to school."
