(GLO)- In 2022, TBR39 rice won first prize in the Vietnam's best rice contest. This is the reason why the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with businesses and the three districts of Dak Doa, Ia Grai, and Phu Thien to test-plant 4 hectares of TBR39 rice in the 2022-2023 Winter-Spring crop. Initially, this high-quality rice variety is not only suitable for local climate and soil conditions but also has high yields.
In the 2022-2023 Winter-Spring crop, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center will proactively coordinate with companies, corporations and cooperatives to participate in the production of high-yield, high-quality rice varieties in the form of socialization. In particular, companies and corporations specializing in the production of high-quality rice varieties will support 100% of rice seeds and transfer technical processes to farmers; at the same time, commit to purchasing at a price 500-1,000 VND/kg higher than the market price.
One of the pioneers is ThaiBinh Seed Group Joint Stock Company, which has supported people, mainly ethnic minorities in the three districts of Dak Doa, Ia Grai and Phu Thien, to deploy a pilot planting model of TBR39 rice variety on a scale of 4 hectares. This is a new variety with high yield, high quality, good resistance to pests and diseases, and a growing period in the Winter-Spring crop of about 115-125 days. Notably, in 2022, TBR39 rice product won first prize in the Vietnam's delicious rice contest.
Mr. Hlut (Thung village, Hnol commune, Dak Doa district) said: In the 2022-2023 Winter-Spring crop, villagers were very excited when for the first time, businesses supported them to plant 11 hectares of rice with many high-yield, high-quality rice varieties, including 2 hectares of TBR39 rice. From the time of seed supply, soaking and incubation to sowing, villagers were trained and given technical instructions by officials of the units. Up to now, the TBR39 rice area has grown and developed well, with an expected yield of 6.5-7 tons/ha, higher than the HT1 variety that people have been using for a long time. People hope to continue to receive support for this variety for production in the 2023 crop.

The TBR39 rice variety testing model was also deployed in Chu A Thai commune (Phu Thien district) with an area of 1 hectare. After harvesting, the yield reached 7-7.5 tons/ha. Mr. Pham Ngoc Nghia - Director of Chu A Thai Agricultural Cooperative - said: Every year, the Cooperative regularly coordinates with companies and corporations producing high-quality rice varieties to bring new rice varieties for testing on Phu Thien land. Particularly in the 2022-2023 Winter-Spring crop, the Cooperative and 1 household tested 1 hectare of TBR39 rice variety. During the planting and care process, no harmful pests or diseases were detected, and the growth period was about 1 week longer than other rice varieties.
“After processing, TBR39 rice produces quality rice grains and delicious rice. After harvesting, farmers are purchased by the cooperative at a price of 7,500 VND/kg. Currently, TBR39 rice is displayed and sold by the cooperative at stores in the district at a price of 25,000 VND/kg. In the coming time, the cooperative will continue to test the TBR39 rice variety for people to learn and replicate,” Mr. Nghia informed.
According to Mr. Trieu Tan Phu - Director of ThaiBinh Seed Company Limited in the Central Highlands: In recent years, many high-quality rice varieties have been supplied by the Company for mass production, bringing high economic efficiency. Particularly, the TBR39 rice variety is currently being tested for high yield, delicious rice, and a long growing period of 120-130 days.
“Because we are in the process of completing the national variety recognition dossier, the Company has not yet mass produced. We are coordinating with localities in Gia Lai province to build testing models and support varieties for people to plant 0.5-1 ha for specific evaluation. The Company wishes to serve people in the best way possible, bringing about bumper harvests,” said Mr. Phu.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Doan Ngoc Co - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - said: The first trial crop of TBR39 rice variety in 3 localities has brought about optimistic signals. TBR39 rice variety has a relatively long growing period, strong tillering plants, no signs of pests and diseases such as blast, grain rot, etc. Rice yield is relatively high, ranging from 6 tons to 7.5 tons/ha.
“To ensure the correct planting process of the TBR39 rice variety trial by the professional agency, the Department of Agriculture recommends that localities must choose land with sufficient irrigation water. In addition, the TBR39 rice variety has a long growing period, so the trial area in the 2023 crop must be sown early to avoid damage caused by floods at the end of the crop. In the immediate future, this rice variety is only produced according to the trial model, not yet widely replicated. Localities need to guide people to produce organically and cooperate with companies and cooperatives to build rice brands. It is expected that this year's crop, the trial planting area of the TBR39 rice variety will be expanded to about 20 hectares in many areas in the province for people to access,” the Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development added.
