Mountain town without peach blossoms for Tet

In previous years, from the 10th of December, the Muong Xen town area (Ky Son) was bustling with the buying and selling of peach blossoms between locals and traders. However, this year was different, until the 16th of December, this mountain town was still devoid of peach blossoms for Tet.

Going up the road from Muong Xen town to Pha Danh and Huoi Tu communes to reach the stone digging capital of Muong Long… occasionally we come across a few peach selling spots, but the quantity is very small.

The most popular area is still the central area of Muong Long commune with several peach selling points, but each point only has about 10 branches. According to peach sellers, when there is a large quantity, traders will come to buy.

Mr. Ly Quoc Sy in Trung Tam village, Muong Long commune said that his family has more than 300 peach trees planted in the fields and home garden. This year, the peach trees bloomed later than usual, so it was not until the morning of December 15 that he started to ask people to cut the peach trees to sell. But after choosing and choosing, he could only cut 10 satisfactory peach trees.

"A beautiful peach tree must be many years old, have mossy trunks, many buds and bloom at the right time. However, because of the high sales in previous years, this year the proportion of young peach trees is large, so we do not want to sell. However, if the market is good, the family will harvest about 150 peach trees, otherwise if the market is difficult to sell, we will leave them," said Mr. Ly Quoc Sy.

Mr. Va Cha Xa - Chairman of Muong Long Commune People's Committee said: The whole commune has about 10 hectares of peach trees planted in the villages: Muong Long 1, Muong Long 2, Sa Lay, Tham Luc... and Trung Tam village. This year, because the peach trees bud later than other years, the harvest is late, however, starting from December 15, people will choose beautiful peach trees to cut and sell to customers.

Peaches grown here are stone peaches, which are old and have big buds, green shoots, mossy stems, etc., and are popular in the market during Tet. Therefore, peaches are a significant source of income for the people here. Statistics from previous years show that during Tet, people earn about 2 billion VND from selling peaches.

"In the commune, there are many beautiful peach and apricot gardens that attract tourists. Therefore, the commune has also promoted and mobilized people to take care of and protect beautiful peach gardens to develop tourism. Therefore, during Tet this year, many households did not cut down peach trees to sell. Another reason is that this year, there are 2 leap months in February, so some peach trees have bloomed early, the rest have not yet budded, so people cut them late," said Mr. Va Cha Xa.

That is why, until the morning of December 16, there were still no peach trees for sale in Muong Xen town. According to some traders from Vinh city who came to buy peach trees, in previous years, from December 10, people transported peach trees from other places to sell here bustlingly, but this year it was deserted.

Limit cutting peach trees for tourism

Ky Son stone peach trees are grown by many people in their fields and home gardens. Finding out the reason why people are selling peach trees late this year, Mr. Tho Ba Re - Vice Chairman of Ky Son District People's Committee said that the reason is because the district has promoted and encouraged people to limit cutting peach trees for tourism, especially in Muong Long and Na Ngoi communes... In recent years, the number of tourists coming to Ky Son has increased, in which the destinations are peach and plum gardens in the spring, in the communes there are also policies to develop eco-tourism and garden tourism, in order to exploit the available potential.

On the other hand, because in previous years people exploited too much peach blossoms to sell for Tet, this year the peach blossoms are mainly small.

"Another reason is that this year, there are many heavy trucks carrying ore from Nam Can International Border Gate, which poses a potential traffic accident risk. Therefore, the district has also advised people not to transport peaches for sale to avoid the risk of accidents. Especially in the Muong Xen town area, where many people come and go, if peach sellers are as busy as last year, traffic safety will not be guaranteed," said Mr. Tho Ba Re.

Ky Son stone peaches have been favored by people in the lowlands to decorate for Tet and welcome Spring. Therefore, in previous years, ethnic minorities in Ky Son district had a significant income from selling peaches. However, due to many reasons, this year's Tet holiday, the income from selling peaches will decrease, the market for stone peaches for Tet in Vinh city will not be as large as before./.
