“Improving the quality and effectiveness of press information and propaganda on the economy, businesses and entrepreneurs ensures objectivity, honesty, fairness and encourages the entrepreneurial spirit in society. Limiting negative phenomena and false and inaccurate information affecting businesses is of great significance to both businesses and the press, as it makes an important contribution to facilitating the business environment as well as building a modern, professional and humane press”.
This viewpoint was presented at the Forum "Press and businesses together for a prosperous and happy Vietnam in 2024" with the theme: "Improving the quality of information about businesses in the press", organized by VCCI and the Vietnam Journalists Association, the Central Propaganda Department, and the Ministry of Information and Communications on October 24, in Hanoi.
The press is part of the overall business environment.
Expressing his views on the relationship between the press and enterprises, Journalist, Doctor of Economics Nguyen Minh Phong said that the relationship between the press and enterprises is a relationship of "companionship for development". The press supports enterprises in promoting their brands and building trust with consumers, while providing information to help the state improve management policies. Press information on economics has a profound impact on social life and the development of enterprises. As a bridge between the State, enterprises and the people, the press needs to constantly improve its quality to meet the increasing needs of society.
However, Dr. Nguyen Minh Phong also warned that an article can help a business succeed, but it can also destroy an entire brand if the information is not carefully verified. Therefore, improving the quality of economic press information is not only the responsibility of journalists, but also the responsibility of the whole society.
Affirming that the media and press environment is part of the overall business environment in Vietnam, Mr. Pham Tan Cong, Chairman of VCCI, assessed that a healthy media and press environment that both disseminates information and knowledge about economics and business operations and encourages and motivates the entrepreneurial spirit in society is a key requirement, a foundation to promote the development of enterprises, inspire business in society, and contribute to the country's economic growth.
“Improving the quality and effectiveness of press information and propaganda on the economy, businesses and entrepreneurs, ensuring objectivity and honesty, encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit in society, limiting negative phenomena and false and inaccurate information affecting businesses is important for both businesses and the press. Thereby, it contributes significantly to creating a favorable, safe and equal business environment and building a modern, professional and humane press,” Mr. Cong stated.
The cooperative relationship between the press and businesses is not sustainable.
In recent years, the press has made many contributions to the development of Vietnamese enterprises. Through the press, consumers know more about Vietnamese brands and products of domestic enterprises, thereby contributing to raising awareness, love, and trust in Vietnamese goods, supporting the development of domestic enterprises.
According to Mr. Le Quoc Minh, Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, the press is not only a channel to propagate the State's new policies, but also a channel to record information about enterprises, which in turn becomes an independent voice, helping enterprises respond to policies and express their aspirations and realities.
“At all times, the relationship between the press and businesses is always a companionship and mutual development. With that role, the press has been and is an effective information channel for the economy, helping the State’s policies keep up with economic developments more effectively,” said Mr. Minh.
In addition to the achievements, Mr. Le Quoc Minh frankly acknowledged some remaining limitations, many articles written about enterprises still lack depth and in-depth analysis of business activities of enterprises, leading to incomplete information about enterprises to the market, sometimes even incorrect. Along with that, the press has not fully exploited its potential in supporting enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises. Building a sustainable cooperative relationship between the press and enterprises still faces many difficulties, affecting the effectiveness of information and propaganda work.
The reality is that many large-scale enterprises do not pay much attention to communication and corporate image, leading to transactions between enterprises and the press being individual transactions, thereby reducing the attractiveness and effectiveness. Meanwhile, a part of the press views the issue in a negative way, creating pressure on enterprises, putting pressure on management agencies to investigate in detail, and handle false and unverified information.
Therefore, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, said that if we only think of the press as a channel to advertise products and services, or as a nuisance, this relationship will become very awkward.
“The whole society and the whole world need responsible media, this cannot be done by the press alone. Facing the new era of the country with new opportunities and conditions for development, in order for the press and businesses to work together for a prosperous and happy Vietnam, all parties need to find solutions to redefine the press-business relationship on a more solid and transparent foundation to increase expectations for each other,” said Mr. Lam.
On October 10, 2023, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 41-NQ/TW on building and promoting the role of Vietnamese entrepreneurs in the new era. It raised the issue of promoting the role of press agencies in informing, propagating, and encouraging Vietnamese entrepreneurs. This affirms the Party's viewpoint on the important role of the press in developing entrepreneurs, enterprises, and developing the country's economy. The Forum on October 24 is a practical activity contributing to the implementation of this Resolution.
