"Improving the quality and effectiveness of information and media coverage on the economy , businesses, and entrepreneurs, ensuring objectivity, honesty, and fairness, and encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit in society. Limiting negative phenomena and inaccurate or misleading information affecting businesses is of great significance to both businesses and the media, as it makes a crucial contribution to facilitating the business environment and building a modern, professional, and humane press."
This viewpoint was expressed at the forum "Journalism and Businesses Working Together for a Prosperous and Happy Vietnam in 2024" with the theme: "Improving the Quality of Information about Businesses in the Press," organized by VCCI and the Vietnam Journalists Association , the Central Propaganda Department, and the Ministry of Information and Communications on October 24th in Hanoi.
The press is part of the overall business environment.
Expressing his views on the relationship between the press and businesses, journalist and economist Dr. Nguyen Minh Phong stated that the relationship between the press and businesses is one of "partnership for mutual development." The press supports businesses in promoting their brands and building consumer trust, while also providing information to help the government improve its management policies. Economic news has a profound impact on social life and business development. As a bridge between the government, businesses, and the people, the press needs to continuously improve its quality to meet the ever-increasing demands of society.
However, Dr. Nguyen Minh Phong also warned that while an article can help a business succeed, it can also bring down an entire brand if the information is not carefully verified. Therefore, improving the quality of economic journalism is not only the responsibility of journalists but also a shared responsibility of the entire society.
Affirming that the media and press environment is part of the overall business environment in Vietnam, Mr. Pham Tan Cong, Chairman of VCCI, assessed that a healthy media and press environment that both disseminates information and knowledge about the economy and business activities, and encourages and motivates the entrepreneurial spirit in society, is a key requirement and a foundation for promoting the development of businesses, inspiring entrepreneurship in society, and contributing to the country's economic growth.
“Improving the quality and effectiveness of information and media coverage on the economy, businesses, and entrepreneurs, ensuring objectivity and honesty, encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit in society, and limiting negative phenomena and inaccurate information affecting businesses is of great importance to both businesses and the press. This will significantly contribute to creating a favorable, safe, and equitable business environment and building a modern, professional, and humane press,” Mr. Cong stated.
The collaborative relationship between the press and businesses is not yet sustainable.
Over the past period, the press has made many contributions to the development of Vietnamese businesses. Through the press, consumers have become more aware of Vietnamese brands and products from domestic businesses, thereby contributing to raising awareness, love, and trust in Vietnamese goods, supporting the development of domestic businesses.
According to Mr. Le Quoc Minh, Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, and President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, the press, in its role of recording information from businesses, is not only a channel for disseminating new state policies, but also, conversely, an independent voice, helping businesses respond to policies and express their aspirations and realities.
"At all times, the relationship between the press and businesses has always been one of partnership and mutual development. In that role, the press has been and continues to be an effective information channel for the economy, helping the State's policies keep pace with economic developments more effectively," Mr. Minh said.
Besides the achievements, Mr. Le Quoc Minh frankly acknowledged some existing limitations. Many articles written about businesses lack in-depth analysis of their business operations, leading to incomplete and sometimes inaccurate information about businesses reaching the market. Furthermore, the press has not fully exploited its potential in supporting businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises. Building sustainable cooperative relationships between the press and businesses remains challenging, affecting the effectiveness of information and communication efforts.
A current reality is that many large businesses still pay little attention to corporate communication and image building, leading to isolated transactions between businesses and the press, thus reducing their attractiveness and effectiveness. Meanwhile, some media outlets view issues negatively, putting pressure on businesses and forcing regulatory agencies to investigate and address false and unverified information.
Therefore, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, believes that if we only think of the press as a channel for advertising products and services, or as a nuisance, this relationship will become very skewed.
“The whole society and the whole world need responsible media, something that the press alone cannot do. Facing a new era for the country with new opportunities and conditions for development, for the press and businesses to work together for a prosperous and happy Vietnam, both sides need to find solutions to redefine the press-business relationship on a more solid and transparent foundation to increase mutual trust,” Mr. Lam stated.
On October 10, 2023, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 41-NQ/TW on building and promoting the role of Vietnamese entrepreneurs in the new era. This resolution emphasizes the importance of the role of the press in informing, publicizing, and encouraging Vietnamese entrepreneurs. This affirms the Party's viewpoint on the crucial role of the press in developing the business community, enterprises, and the national economy. The forum on October 24th is a practical activity contributing to the implementation of this Resolution.
