Ho Chi Minh City National University has just announced the results of a survey on the project to study the relationship between the use of free time and learning efficiency and satisfaction with university life of students at Ho Chi Minh City National University dormitories.
Students mainly spend their free time using social networks.
The survey received more than 21,655 responses from students of member universities of Ho Chi Minh City National University living in dormitories.
Accordingly, a mean score (GPA) is calculated for each factor, and the "neutral" level is determined at a GPA of 3.0.
The survey showed that most students have free time from 2 - 4 hours per day (accounting for 66.7%); 22.9% of students have free time from 1 - 2 hours per day; 10% of students have less than 1 hour of free time.
You mainly spend your free time resting, relaxing and entertaining yourself by watching movies, listening to music, and using social networks. This is the most chosen activity, showing the need to relax and reduce stress after stressful hours of studying (Average score: 3.9).
Nowadays, students spend most of their free time on purely recreational activities rather than planned or self-development activities. Expanding their social network is not given much attention by students (average score 3.3).
The figures show that students rarely set clear goals, make to-do lists or make specific plans for their free time, and are also limited in managing time, exploring interests and arranging activities appropriately with an average score of 2.9 out of 5.0 for each activity.
Students are well aware of the importance of actively using free time (GPA: 3.9) and understand that using free time effectively can bring happiness and joy.
However, some students still have incorrect concepts about planning for free time, thinking that planning for free time is a waste of time (Average score: 2.9).
This shows that students do not really understand the benefits of planning. The majority of students believe that health and social and family factors greatly influence how they spend their free time (Average score: 3.5).
Most students feel pressure when comparing with friends, exam pressure
In the university environment, students face many pressures during their studies. The majority of students said that they felt pressure when comparing themselves with their friends and exam pressure (3.6). This shows "peer pressure" in the university environment.
The analysis showed that students' positive intentions for their leisure time played an important role in increasing their satisfaction with university life.
Students who prioritize "personal development" will have higher satisfaction with college life than students who prioritize it less.
According to the research team, students are giving priority to entertainment activities, but not focusing on personal development activities.
The analysis results also showed that students had low self-esteem and anxiety when they saw their friends had better academic achievements.
Need to focus on students' mental health
"To solve this problem, departments and training units of the school need to take measures. Encourage students to form study groups (which can be supported by senior students) to promote exchange and connection between students.
"It is necessary to pay attention to the mental health and psychology of students, especially effective approaches to all students," the project implementation team recommended.
