Nearly 500,000 pages of Han Nom documents in Thua Thien Hue are preserved using digital technology.

(To Quoc) - Thanks to the application of information technology and digital library conversion, hundreds of thousands of pages of Han Nom documents in Thua Thien Hue province have been digitized to preserve and promote long-term value.


Thua Hue General Library informed that in recent times, the unit has continuously applied information technology to the digital transformation of libraries. This has contributed to improving the efficiency of library activities, better serving the needs of readers. One of the outstanding results that can be mentioned is that a large amount of Han Nom documents in the area have been digitized to preserve and promote long-term value.

Specifically, from 2009 to present, the Thua Thien Hue Provincial General Library in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City General Science Library has implemented a program to collect and digitize Han Nom documents in Thua Thien Hue province. Through field surveys, research groups have digitized nearly 500,000 pages of Han Nom documents in 199 villages, 967 clans and 19 palaces and private homes, including: royal decrees, genealogies, funeral orations, certificates, land registers, administrative documents, village covenants, worshiping texts and other types of documents.

The collected documents are all original documents, quite complete and diverse in Han Nom documents in Thua Thien Hue. The documents are expressed on many different materials with rich content and value in many fields such as textual studies, history - culture, ideology and customs... The research, investigation, survey, collection associated with the digitization of Han Nom documents in recent times has helped many people understand more deeply about Thua Thien Hue and contributed to the study of Vietnam in the medieval period.

From the results of the work of collecting and digitizing this Han Nom documentary heritage, up to 2024, 5 publications have been compiled, translated and printed, including: "Directory of the summary of the Nguyen Dynasty's royal decrees in Thua Thien Hue" (2018); "Royal decrees, royal decrees, and edicts of the Nguyen Dynasty in Thua Thien Hue province" (2020), "Nguyen Dynasty's official degrees in Thua Thien Hue province (2021), "Han Nom documents and petitions of villages in Thua Thien Hue province" (2022); "Village conventions in Thua Thien Hue province" (2023). After being published, these research works have been highly appreciated by scientists and readers in terms of academics as well as content quality.

Along with that, Thua Thien Hue General Library also organized an exhibition combined with giving away CDs on digitized Han Nom documents. Through these activities, it contributed to raising social awareness of the importance of preserving and promoting the value of Han Nom documents in the area.
