The 8th IAPSIT International Sugar Industry Conference and Sugarcon 2024 took place from September 16 to 19, within the framework of scientific events of the 20th "Meet Vietnam" program.
The conference was organized by the Vietnam Rencontres du Vietnam, the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in collaboration with the International Association of Sugar Industry and Sugarcane Technology (IAPSIT), and the Sugar Industry Research and Promotion Society (SSRP).
According to the organizers, the sugar industry includes the production, processing and marketing of sugar products, mainly from sugarcane and sugar beet, of which sugarcane accounts for nearly 80% of global production.
This conference focused on discussing solutions to exploit the potential of technological innovation in areas such as bioenergy, green harvesting, carbon storage, climate change-adapted crop varieties and agricultural technology 4.0.
In addition, technological solutions for water management, steam recycling, environmental pollution reduction and value enhancement from biomass such as cellulose, lignin, molasses, CO2 will also be discussed.
Delegates also looked to promote the transition to a low-carbon economy in the production of biofuels from cellulose, hydrogen fuel cell technology and aviation fuel.
The conference also proposed the bio-refinery model as a sustainable direction for the sugar industry. This model will create higher value products from sugarcane and by-products, while promoting the transition to a global bioeconomy, opening up new market opportunities for the sugar industry.
“The conference will not only be a platform for sharing views and experiences on global issues, but also generate sustainable and profitable initiatives for the sugarcane, sugar beet and integrated industries, especially in the ASEAN region,” said Dr Solomon, President of the Society for Sugar Research and Promotion (SSRP) India.
