The Vietnam Trade Office in San Francisco said that Dragonberry Produce Company (a US company headquartered in Canby, Oregon) has just imported nearly 20 tons of fresh lychee from Vietnam. This lychee was transported by sea, successfully imported, officially distributed and sold at Safeway and Albertsons supermarket chains in the US West Coast states including Washington, Oregon and California, just in time to serve the US people on Independence Day, July 4.

Safeway (https://www.safeway.com) and Albertsons (https://www.albertsons.com) are the largest supermarket chains on the West Coast of the United States, with Safeway having 913 stores and Albertsons having over 300 stores.

“Continuing to sell lychee in these supermarket systems at a competitive price of only 3.99 USD/pint, equivalent to 200,000 VND/kg, is a great success in promoting the consumption of Vietnamese fruits in general and lychee in particular in the US market, because most of our country's fruits exported to the US only reach the system of small markets and supermarkets serving Asian consumers.

The price of VND200,000/kg is very competitive compared to fresh lychees imported from China and Mexico (currently sold at the Asian market in San Francisco for $4.99/lb, equivalent to VND259,000/kg), which are the two main suppliers and also the two biggest competitors of fresh lychees from Vietnam. This is the result of many efforts by Vietnamese and US businesses" - the Trade Branch assessed.

Fresh Vietnamese lychees are marketed in the United States under the Golden Lychee brand, with beautiful, attractive, professional packaging, suitable for the psychology and consumer tastes of American customers.

Previously, on June 20, the first batch of fresh lychees of the 2023 crop from Bac Giang province was transported by air to Houston, Texas (USA).

Although fresh Vietnamese lychees are popular in the United States, the trade branch said that exporting lychees to the US market still faces many difficulties, most notably the lack of a US-recognized irradiation facility in the North.

The lack of irradiation facilities according to US standards to ensure the conditions for exporting fresh fruit, especially lychee due to its short preservation time, to this market is a big challenge because it has to be transported to Ho Chi Minh City for irradiation, increasing transportation costs, loss of quantity and quality of exported fruit and above all, reducing the consumption time of lychee in the distribution system.

In addition, our post-harvest preservation technology still has many limitations, especially the lack of uniformity in the process of preliminary processing, packaging, preservation and transportation, and the inability to control temperature and humidity stably, etc., thus not ensuring the extension of the shelf life of fruits, vegetables, tubers in general and lychees in particular.
