The above information was revealed by Mr. Roh Tae Moon at the Galaxy Z Fold 6 launch event in Paris, France on July 12. Galaxy AI and foldable smartphones are considered a new strategy to contribute to increasing sales in one of Samsung's most important business segments.
Among the new features on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is Note Assist, which can instantly summarize voice memos into text. Composer writes emails and posts for social media based on a few keywords and a user's schedule.
Samsung is also expanding its translation capabilities, including 16 languages and plans to increase to 20 by the end of 2024. The Interpreter feature lets people speak in different languages while reading the translation on the phone screen in real time.
Behind the new AI features are Google's Gemini generative AI model and Samsung's proprietary software. The South Korean company will also bring AI to the Galaxy S24 series launched earlier this year.
In 2019, Samsung was the first company to announce a foldable smartphone using a flexible OLED panel. Since then, the Korean giant has released a new version every year.
With the 6th generation, Apple's rival wants to consolidate its pioneering image in the smartphone field, especially after being surpassed by Huawei in the foldable smartphone segment in the first quarter. According to research firm Counterpoint, the Chinese company accounts for 35% of the global market share thanks to strong sales of the new model.
Lenovo-owned Motorola Mobility and Honor are also gaining ground thanks to lower prices.
Foldable smartphones account for just 1% of the smartphone market. However, growing competition poses a major threat to Samsung's position.
Samsung is also struggling with sluggish growth in the overall smartphone market, with demand largely peaking in advanced economies, while inflation-stricken consumers are reluctant to upgrade.
Global smartphone shipments fell 3% in 2023 to 1.17 billion units, the lowest level in a decade, according to research firm IDC. Samsung fell 14% to 226.6 million units, falling behind Apple and losing its top spot for the first time in 13 years.
Many believe Samsung is on the right track with the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Counterpoint is positive about the device's AI features and predicts Samsung's foldable smartphone business will grow an average of 18% per year through 2028.
Smartphones will account for about 40% of Samsung's revenue by 2023, down from more than 60% a decade earlier. Breathing new life into the segment is a major challenge for South Korea's largest chaebol.
