On the evening of October 12th, immediately after the 1-1 draw with India, striker Nguyen Van Quyet walked to the sidelines and announced that he would officially retire from the Vietnamese national team.
He made his debut for the national team in 2011, under the guidance of coach Falko Gotz. In his very first match as a starter for the Vietnamese national team in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Van Quyet scored one goal and provided one assist in the victory against Macau.
He ended his international career when coach Kim Sang-sik was in charge.
After 60 appearances for the national team, Van Quyet scored 16 goals and played with the "Golden Star Warriors" in 5 AFF Cup tournaments, winning the championship in 2018.
Van Quyet is considered a legend of Vietnamese football. He won many titles with Hanoi FC, from the V.League and the National Cup to the Golden Ball, however, Van Quyet's international career has been quite turbulent.
When he was young and considered a "rookie," the Vietnamese national team began to decline. When Van Quyet truly became a crucial player, Vietnamese football suffered a bitter defeat in the semi-finals of the 2016 AFF Cup.
Two years later, when the Vietnamese national team won the AFF Cup, the striker born in 1991 did not contribute much, mostly coming off the bench. Under coaches Park Hang-seo and Philippe Troussier, Van Quyet gradually disappeared from the national team.
The Hanoi FC striker said after the match against India: "This is the last game I will wear the national team jersey. I hope the Vietnamese team will play well, and that the young players will integrate quickly. I think I no longer have the opportunity to wear the national team jersey."
I was very surprised to be back and playing in front of the fans. I want to play more, but now it's time for the young players. I've always been there for them, no matter what role I play. For the past 18 years, I've always strived, and Vietnamese football will develop, and the national team will grow stronger."
