The incident occurred as Rubiales was handing out medals to the Spanish players. When Jenni Hermoso went up to receive them, he grabbed the striker and suddenly kissed her on the lips, much to the astonishment of the "victim", the people on the pitch as well as millions of television viewers. This act, which was considered rude, sparked outrage in and outside Spain. Hermoso said that such gestures "should never be punished".
But apparently, her words of defense for her boss did not work. From ministers to the Spanish prime minister, everyone spoke out strongly in criticism.
And in the latest move, FIFA has stepped in. A statement sent by the organization stated: "The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has informed Rubiales that it is investigating his actions before it can issue a disciplinary sanction. All based on the events that occurred during the 2023 Women's World Cup final."
Not only did Mr. Rubiales kiss Hermoso, he also carried another player.
The announcement said Mr. Rubiales had violated Article 13, paragraphs 1 and 2 of the FIFA Code. The agency also affirmed that it "always strictly deals with any similar behavior".
Pressure is mounting on Rubiales, who has also been criticised for lifting Athenea del Castillo onto his shoulders. He also took the opportunity to kiss several other players on the cheek during the award presentation.
Rubiales initially called his critics “stupid,” but later posted a video apology. However, it appears to have come too late. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the apology was “insufficient and unsatisfactory.”
Meanwhile, the head of Spanish football reportedly begged Hermoso to make a video with him to explain the incident. He approached the player and spoke to her while they were both on a flight back to Spain. But she refused. Hermoso said FUTPRO and her own management company would handle the matter on her behalf.
Tonight Vietnam time, the Spanish Football Federation will hold a meeting to assess what happened and does not rule out the possibility that they will put pressure on President Rubiales to resign.
