The European Commission (EC) has just planned to allow visitors to and from the European Union (EU) Schengen area to store travel information in digital form.
According to Euronews, the EC said that data currently stored on the chip of a passport or identity card could be transferred to smartphones to allow faster border crossings, paving the way for a more seamless and secure travel experience.
The EC believes that submitting travel plans and documents to authorities by phone in advance will shorten the time at border crossings, allow for quick and accurate verification and make it easier to detect suspects, especially those suspected of human trafficking.
The immigration system is expected to go into trial operation as early as November.
