In a statement on behalf of the EU published on the evening of October 13, the EU's foreign policy chief, Vice President of the European Commission Josep Borrell, said: "Such attacks on UN peacekeepers are a serious violation of international law and are completely unacceptable. These attacks must stop immediately."
"The EU condemns all attacks against UN missions. This statement expresses particular concern regarding the Israeli Defense Forces' attacks on UNIFIL, which resulted in the injury of several peacekeepers," Borrell stressed.
“All parties” to the conflict have a duty to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and assets, Mr Borrell added.
"We are looking forward to an explanation and a comprehensive investigation from the Israeli authorities into the attacks on UNIFIL, which plays a fundamental role in maintaining the stability of south Lebanon," he said.
UNIFIL said previous Israeli attacks on watchtowers, cameras, communications equipment and lighting had limited its surveillance capabilities, making it unable to monitor the full extent of violations of international law during the conflict.
In a phone call on October 13, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin affirmed to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant "the importance of Israel taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of UNIFIL forces and the Lebanese Armed Forces."
