Initial information, in April 2013, Ms. N. (17 years old) and Mr. T. went to the People's Committee of Thuan Ha commune to register their marriage. Because she was not old enough to register for marriage, Ms. N. used the information of her older sister named H. to register.

Thuan Ha Commune People's Committee later issued a marriage registration certificate with information about Mr. T. and Ms. H.

Some time later, Ms. H. married a man and was still granted a marriage registration certificate by the People's Committee of Thuan Ha commune.

In September 2024, Ms. N. and her husband went to the People's Committee of Thuan Ha commune to get a birth certificate for their third child.

At this time, Ms. N. wanted to put her name in the mother's name section on the child's birth certificate, instead of her sister's name as in the marriage registration, so the judicial officer of Thuan Ha commune discovered that Ms. N. "borrowed" her sister's name to register for marriage 11 years ago.

After discovering the incident, the officials of Thuan Ha commune instructed Ms. N. and her husband to file a petition with the court to cancel the illegal marriage registration between Mr. T. and Ms. H.

Regarding the birth certificates previously issued to Ms. N.’s two children, Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet Mai said that Ms. N.’s family must carry out DNA testing to identify the mother of the child. Only after the testing results are available will the authorities have the basis to reissue the birth certificates and correct the mother’s name.

"There is no dispute about the case because they are sisters. Currently, these people are taking steps to correct the incorrect name declaration in the marriage registration. However, this is also a lesson for people in the process of completing paperwork," said Ms. Mai.
