Over the past three weekends, the animated film Elemental (directed by Peter Sohn) earned only $29.6 million in the North American market, the film with the worst opening revenue of Pixar ever, according to the Hollywood Reporter .
Elemental ’s North American gross last week was lower than Toy Story’s 1995 release, which grossed $29.1 million back then, or $50 million today, adjusted for inflation. Box office observers predict that in its first four days of release (from June 18), the film will gross just $33.4 million, a meager amount.
Pixar films are typically expected to open with at least $50 million. Elemental received an A CinemaScore from audiences and a decent 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the scores couldn't save the film's opening weekend.
Looking around the box office in recent times, we can see that in December 2022, DreamWorks' animated film Puss and Boots: The Last Wish only earned a meager $12.4 million in the first 3 days of its opening in the North American market, but the film's total global revenue was up to $480.9 million. Or in Pixar itself, in 2007, the film Ratatouille earned $47 million in the North American market but eventually "made a fortune" with $623.7 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
The movie Elemental "shares the same boat" with two other Pixar movies, The Good Dinosaur (2015) and Onward (2020), which are movies with opening revenue under 50 million USD. The future of Elemental , in comparison with the blockbuster The Flash (which is also struggling to make money with a disappointing opening revenue of 55.7 million USD), is unpredictable. The American press commented that, historically, Pixar movies have been very easy to attract audiences to theaters, but with Elemental , it may be much more difficult.
