“Although forecasts issued in the spring tend to be less reliable, there is a historical tendency for La Nina to follow strong El Nino events,” the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said.
The current El Nino weather pattern, which has brought hot, dry weather in Asia and heavier-than-usual rains in many parts of the Americas, is likely to give way to neutral conditions between April and June 2024, the CPC said.
The CPC said in its monthly forecast that there is a 55% chance of La Nina developing between June and August this year.
Last year, India restricted rice exports due to unfavorable weather conditions, while output in top wheat exporter Australia was affected. Palm oil and rice plantations in Southeast Asia received less than normal rainfall.
However, an official from the India Meteorological Department said, “The development of La Nina is beneficial for the Indian monsoon. Normally, the monsoon brings abundant rainfall during La Nina years.”
The June-September monsoon, crucial to India's $3 trillion economy, brings nearly 70% of the rain the country needs to irrigate crops and replenish reservoirs and aquifers.
