The East African Community (EAC) launched negotiations in Nairobi, Kenya, to admit Somalia into the regional economic bloc.
The EAC currently has seven member states, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda. Previously, the EAC sent a team of technical experts to Somalia to verify and assess Mogadishu's readiness to join the bloc as its eighth member.
Somalia's Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, Mohamud Abdirahman Sheikh Farah, stated that his country desires to join the EAC because of its strong socio-economic ties with all members of the bloc. According to Sheikh Farah, Somalia has received a positive welcome from the heads of state of all EAC members.
