The road is seriously degraded, the cost of transporting materials to build houses for the Dan Lai people is twice as high as the price of the materials.

The implementation of housing construction for poor households and households with difficult housing conditions for Dan Lai people in Mon Son commune (Con Cuong) is currently facing difficulties due to degraded roads and the cost of transporting materials is nearly double the cost of buying materials.

On the morning of April 10, we and the working group of the People's Committee of Mon Son Commune and the Mon Son Border Guard Station went to Khe Bung and Co Phat villages of Mon Son Commune. These are two villages where 100% of the Dan Lai people live, and are also the core area of Pu Mat National Park.

The distance from the center of Mon Son commune to Khe Bung and Co Phat villages is more than 20 km, and is a single road.

Currently, this road is being renovated and upgraded under a public investment project and 5 km has been constructed. The remaining 15 km is still in a state of serious degradation, both steep and muddy, slippery, so when it rains, people and motorbikes have difficulty traveling, and cars cannot enter.

Therefore, the cost of transporting agricultural products and raw materials is often much higher than the general market level.

Seeing a truck carrying cement, iron, and steel materials to Co Phat village to build houses for people under the housing support program for poor households and households with housing difficulties on the Mon Son - Co Phat route, construction contractor Nguyen Van Nam said that the service price for transporting a truck from the center of Mon Son commune to Co Phat village is on average 2 million VND.

Cement alone (the value of 1 ton of cement is about 1.5 - 1.6 million VND) costs 2.5 million VND to transport from the People's Committee of Mon Son Commune to Co Phat Village. Therefore, the cost of building a house in a remote area is double, even triple, compared to other more favorable localities.

In addition, the cost of hiring workers and construction workers is also higher. "In central areas, construction workers earn about 400,000 VND/day, but in remote, difficult areas like Co Phat, it costs 500,000 - 600,000 VND/day," Mr. Nam added.

Mr. La Van Phuong in Khe Bung village said that this time his family received support from the State to build a house worth 60 million VND. In addition to bamboo, reed, and meters of wood that the family can make themselves to make doors and partitions, other materials must be purchased from the Mon Son commune center.

"The cost of hiring a delivery person is very expensive, more than the cost of buying iron and steel. When the family needs materials like bricks or roofing sheets, they have to ride their own motorbike and ask their neighbors to help, because the cost of hiring a delivery person is too high," said Mr. Phuong.

Regarding the difficulties in transporting materials to build houses for the people, the leader of Mon Son commune said that the commune government has planned to mobilize social resources and local forces to transport raw materials to minimize costs and ensure the completion of houses for the people with the amount of 60 million VND/house.

In addition, Mon Son commune and Con Cuong district are also researching house models that are suitable for the customs and practices of the people and suitable for the supported budget.

The People's Committee of Con Cuong district has also reported and proposed that the Provincial People's Committee consider increasing the level of support for building new and repairing houses for Dan Lai ethnic households, helping the locality and people to complete on schedule before July 31, 2025. The District People's Committee will also direct the maximum mobilization of forces, units, localities and socialized resources to be determined to complete the set goals.
