The most beautiful flooded road in China

Việt NamViệt Nam06/01/2025

Yong Wu Road in Jiangxi Province is known as "the most beautiful in China" thanks to the scene of Poyang Lake rising, causing the road to completely sink into the water.

Yong Wu Road is part of the X219 route, connecting the ancient town of Wuzhen with neighboring towns in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province. The project is more than 5 km long and passes through Poyang Lake - the largest freshwater lake in China. When the lake water level rises to about 18.6 m, the road is submerged in water, creating a unique scene, so it is known as the most beautiful road under water.

When the lake water level is higher than 19 meters, local authorities will stop traffic on the route to ensure safety. Therefore, visitors are only allowed to admire this landscape around the beginning of the rainy season. In other seasons, the water level has not reached flood warning level and is still safe for traffic. Last August, when the road reopened, more than 8,000 vehicles were on the road, causing a traffic jam.

Since the project officially came into operation in 2013, there have been no serious accidents, thanks to safety barriers on both sides and drivers traveling on the route obeying the maximum allowed speed.

In addition to Yong Wu Road, the Shiziguan Wooden Bridge, a structure that floats on the Qingjiang River in Hubei Province, is equally famous. However, the road was temporarily closed after an accident in 2023 when a car crashed through the guardrail and plunged into the water. The section of the wooden bridge has since reopened and now has speed and weight limits.
