On the night of September 22, after working with teachers at Trung Ly Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities in Muong Lat District (Thanh Hoa) to provide dinner and safe sleeping places for more than 200 students in the school's classroom area, geography teacher Bui Thi Cham, 34 years old, had time to tell the story of going to each room to call students to quickly run away from the dormitory to avoid landslides.
According to teacher Cham, at around 12:25 on September 22, after finishing lunch, she saw that it had been pouring rain since the night of September 21.
On September 22, Ms. Cham was on duty at the dormitory. As a geography teacher who knows about natural disasters, she was worried that the rocks and soil on the hill behind the dormitory had been soaked with water for many days and could easily cause landslides.
Especially when hundreds of students are taking a nap, it is very dangerous when flash floods and landslides occur. Ms. Cham thought as she rushed up to the dormitory to check and saw rocks and dirt starting to fall along with mud flowing down from the hill.

“Seeing signs of danger, I quickly ran to each room to wake up the students who were taking a nap and asked them to move to the school's classroom area.
Because of being suddenly woken up, some students were panicking, some were still sleepy, I quickly ran down to the classroom and used the loudspeaker to announce that there was a landslide behind the dormitory, asking all students to quickly run out of their rooms and move to the classroom area to ensure safety", Ms. Cham said.
After Ms. Cham called, more than 200 students sleeping in the dormitory quickly left their rooms to avoid landslides.
More than 10 minutes later, hundreds of cubic meters of rock and soil from the hill behind crashed into the dormitory, destroying 3 rooms. The beds where the students had just slept were deformed. The furniture in the room was displaced and severely damaged.

On the night of September 22, Mr. Hoang Van Dung - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Lat district - affirmed: "Fortunately, teachers at Trung Ly Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities Boarding School called on students to quickly leave the dormitory before the serious landslide occurred. If we had been a little slower, a disaster would have happened to the students."
More than 200 students are safe
Teacher Nguyen Duy Thuy - principal of Trung Ly Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities - said that after teacher Cham called on students who were taking a nap to quickly get up and avoid the landslide, 8 teachers in the public housing area far from the school's dormitory area helped more than 200 students move their belongings down to the classroom area to ensure safety.
On September 23, students of the school are temporarily off school to avoid floods according to the instructions of the Department of Education and Training of Muong Lat district.
However, the school still cooks two main meals (lunch and dinner) for all students staying at the school.
“Teacher Bui Thi Cham is from Cam Thuy district (Thanh Hoa), has been a contract teacher with the school for three years.
In May 2024, Ms. Cham signed a contract with the People's Committee of Muong Lat district according to Decree 111.
Ms. Cham is a teacher who always emphasizes responsibility for her work, especially her duty as a student in the dormitory.
