Duc Tho urgently controls African swine fever

Duc Tho district (Ha Tinh) has just announced an outbreak of African swine fever in Lam Trung Thuy commune, and has zoned off areas at high risk of outbreaks in some neighboring areas.

The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram in Trung Nam village (Lam Trung Thuy commune) raises 37 pigs and sows, of which about 20 are ready for sale. Before selling, the family asked the commune veterinary office to come and check and take samples for testing, and discovered that 9 pigs were infected with African swine fever with a total weight of 450 kg and had to be destroyed. According to Ms. Tram, the family raised the pigs to supply the market during Tet, but this incident caused great economic damage.

Up to now, Lam Trung Thuy commune has detected 40 pigs from 12 households infected with the disease, mainly concentrated in 5 villages: Trung Bac, Trung Khanh, Trung Dong, Trung Nam and Hoa Binh with a total weight of 2,666 kg. Under the guidance of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock of the district, the locality has destroyed all of these infected pigs.

To be proactive in disease prevention, Lam Trung Thuy commune authorities require all livestock farms to take samples of livestock to test for African swine fever before selling them. This is one of the ways to detect sick livestock early, thereby having effective solutions to contain the disease, preventing it from spreading widely.

Duc Tho district has issued Decision No. 1989/QD-UBND on announcing African swine fever in Lam Trung Thuy commune; at the same time, zoning areas at high risk of outbreaks, including the communes of Bui La Nhan, Yen Ho, Tan Dan, An Dung and Thanh Binh Thinh.

Mr. Ha Quang Thang - Deputy Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock in Duc Tho district said: "To strengthen measures to isolate and contain the epidemic, to prevent it from spreading widely, the unit and Lam Trung Thuy commune have sent staff to villages and households to check and collect samples for testing to detect infected animals early. The center has also provided 300 liters of disinfectant chemicals, and at the same time instructed people on measures to clean barns and implement epidemic prevention measures in accordance with regulations."

Pigs that have not been infected are cared for and strictly prevented from disease by farmers in Lam Trung Thuy.

Lam Trung Thuy commune is strictly implementing measures to isolate and contain the epidemic. At the same time, it is stepping up propaganda work and instructing people to promptly inform commune veterinary staff and local authorities whenever pigs or pig products are found to be sick, not eating, or suspected of being sick; do not transport pigs in and out of the area during the epidemic without a safety confirmation document from the veterinary agency.

To proactively prevent and limit the spread of the disease, Duc Tho district also requested neighboring localities to increase propaganda about the situation and developments of the disease; raise awareness and responsibility of livestock households, traders and slaughterhouse workers to proactively implement solutions to prevent and control the disease; at the same time, guide and advise livestock farmers not to increase or restore herds when disease safety conditions have not been ensured.
