On November 30, 2022, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 3074/QD - UBND approving the project "Testing resistance to viral mosaic disease and the ability to grow and develop some promising new cassava varieties in Quang Tri province", with the goal of selecting 1-2 new cassava varieties resistant to viral mosaic disease, with high yield and quality; adaptable to soil and weather conditions in the province to supplement the cassava variety structure and recommend for expansion in mass production, gradually replacing the degenerated KM94 cassava variety infected with viral mosaic disease.

The implementation period is from 2023 to 2024 in Huong Hoa, Cam Lo, Vinh Linh districts and Quang Tri town. Based on the results of 2 years of monitoring and testing new cassava varieties, it shows that for cassava mosaic disease, there are 3 cassava varieties including HN1, HN3, HN5 where no harmful mosaic disease was detected, although there were disease sources and disease vectors existing in the fields; 3 cassava varieties STB1, DT4, KM94 - 1 were all infected with cassava mosaic disease. The tested cassava varieties all developed well, had a growing period of 10 - 11 months and were suitable for the weather and soil conditions in the province.

In terms of productivity, there are 3 new cassava varieties with higher productivity than the control cassava variety KM94, namely HN1, HN5, DT4 with an average yield of over 35.25 tons/ha. The starch content of cassava varieties HN1, HN5, DT4 is exceptionally high...

Through evaluation and selection of promising cassava varieties, HN1 and HN5 cassava varieties ensure standards such as high growth, high yield, high starch content, and are not infected with mosaic virus... to be put into production in the near future.

At the conference, the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection requested the Department of Science and Technology to issue a document recognizing the promising cassava varieties HN1 and HN5 as a basis for recommendations and additions to the cassava variety set for production; consider adding the DT4 cassava variety to areas lacking varieties.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has decided to internally circulate cassava varieties HN1 and HN5 in the province. People's Committees of districts, towns, cities and cassava starch processing factories have increased propaganda about the two promising cassava varieties so that people know and put them into production from 2025, gradually replacing the KM94 cassava variety.
