Fresh coconut "sold out"

Ho Chi Minh City is experiencing hot, dry days, so cooling drinks and fruits are selling very well and prices are increasing. Since the end of March, the price of fresh coconuts has been at 15,000 VND/fruit. Up to now, coconuts have increased to 21,000-22,000 VND/fruit and are "sold out". This is a record high price ever in the domestic market.

Mr. Cao Ba Dang Khoa, General Secretary of the Vietnam Coconut Association, said that this year, due to a poor coconut crop, the output is low, while domestic consumption and export demand are both high. Not only fresh coconuts, but also the demand for raw dry coconuts for processing has increased. According to information from businesses, since the beginning of the year, this week there have also been new orders from the Chinese, US and European markets. In particular, Thailand has recently changed its production structure from dry coconuts to fresh coconuts, leading to a shortage of raw materials and increased imports of raw coconuts from Vietnam, making the limited supply even more scarce. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association reported that in the first two months of this year alone, coconut exports to the US reached over 17,000 USD, an increase of 46% over the same period in 2024.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Ben Tre province, the price of dried coconut has doubled compared to the end of 2024, fluctuating around 200,000 VND/dozen (12 fruits), causing raw material costs to escalate. Some units are forced to import coconuts from Indonesia or expand their purchasing areas to neighboring provinces such as Tien Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Vinh Long to maintain production and meet orders.
