That is the opinion of Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City National University, at the workshop on improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning English using the Linearthinking method, recently organized by Ho Chi Minh CityEducation Magazine in collaboration with DOL English with the participation of more than 200 high school teachers in the city.
According to Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, the experience sharing workshop is one of the first things that high schools in the city, together with relevant parties, do to realize a very important goal in Conclusion No. 91 of the Politburo dated August 12, 2024, which is: "Focus on improving foreign language skills of students, gradually making English the second language in schools".
According to Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, from her experience at the Gifted High School, although the students' English proficiency is very good, it is not 100%, and even teachers are not qualified enough to teach the knowledge according to the 2018 General Education Program in English. "That said, the path to making English a second language in schools is very thorny, even in a specialized school," Mai said.
Many high school English teachers attended the workshop to share experiences.
However, according to the Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City National University, it is impossible not to think of ways to overcome those challenges. It is time for all general education institutions to sit together, share experiences, knowledge, skills, take advantage of resources and seize opportunities.... "The way to promote students' English proficiency lies not only in learning methods but also in a regular practice environment, closely linked to the students' daily learning activities and that environment does not stop at the space of a certain school but must belong to the entire student community of the city" - Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai said.
Ms. Ha Dang Nhu Quynh shares about the Linearthinking method to improve the effectiveness of English teaching in high schools.
According to Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, in order for Ho Chi Minh City to successfully and effectively implement the English program, in addition to the attention of leaders at all levels, the efforts of the teaching staff are also important. In addition, there is the development of the Continuing Education system with a variety of forms, providing many skills and methods to support students in improving their English proficiency in addition to studying at high school. "The requirements for students in learning English are increasingly high. Therefore, each teacher in the school must also be proactive and develop to meet the requirements; discuss methods to improve the effectiveness of English teaching in schools. Teachers need to research and apply appropriate methods to the school's students to further improve students' English learning ability in all 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing" - Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc requested.
As a master of English teaching at Nottingham University, UK; a PhD student in Education, Reading University, UK – Academic Director of DoL English Dinh Luc – Ms. Ha Dang Nhu Quynh shared about the Linearthinking method to improve the effectiveness of English teaching in high schools. According to Ms. Quynh, teachers need to consider teaching English not only as teaching language but also as teaching thinking. There will not be a “standard” way of teaching English for all students, but each student will “be a problem to be solved”. Because they have different logical thinking; different social knowledge; different background knowledge of grammar and vocabulary; different English learning habits; different perceptions of English...
