The Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly suggested that with its strengths in developing the digital economy, green economy, circular economy, training, vocational training, etc., Austria should promote cooperation and support Vietnam in these areas.
On the afternoon of April 18, at the National Assembly House, Permanent Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man received Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, who is on an official visit to Vietnam.
National Assembly Permanent Vice Chairman Tran Thanh Man welcomed Minister Alexander Schallenberg on his official visit to Vietnam; expressing his delight at the traditional good friendship between Vietnam and Austria. In 2022, the two countries will celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations with many rich and effective activities.
The Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly recalled that in September 2021, in the context of the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam and the world, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue made a working trip to Austria to attend the 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (WCSP5) with good results.
Thanking Permanent Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man for taking the time to receive the delegation, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg informed the Permanent Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of the results of the courtesy call on Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, talks with Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and working sessions with a number of Vietnamese ministries and branches.
Minister Alexander Schallenberg expressed his belief that on the basis of the 50-year relationship, cooperation between the two countries will enter a new stage of development; emphasizing that the purpose of his visit to Vietnam this time is to seek cooperation opportunities, contributing to further promoting relations between the two countries in many fields, especially in the fields of trade, economy and investment, and said that many leading Austrian enterprises will accompany the delegation to Vietnam.
National Assembly Standing Vice Chairman Tran Thanh Man was pleased to note that the relationship between the two countries has continuously developed well and achieved many remarkable achievements. The two sides have maintained delegation exchanges and contacts at all levels, especially at high levels.
In the economic and trade fields, bilateral cooperation has also achieved positive results. In 2021, two-way trade turnover between the two countries reached 3.35 billion USD, up 5.5% compared to 2020. In 2022, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, two-way trade turnover reached 2.79 billion USD, down 16.7% compared to 2021.
Appreciating the working visit of the Austrian Foreign Minister and the delegation of representatives from more than 20 large Austrian enterprises to Vietnam this time to explore bilateral cooperation opportunities, the Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly expressed his belief that the visit will bring new impetus to further develop the relationship between the two countries in many fields, especially in promoting bilateral cooperation in economics, trade and investment.

Conveying the greetings of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue to the leaders of the Austrian Parliament, Permanent Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man said that the cooperation between the two legislative bodies of the two countries has been very effective in recent times. The two sides regularly exchange delegations at all levels, discuss and share experiences in organization, legislation, supervision, etc.
In particular, the Austrian Parliament established the Austria-South and Southeast Asia Bilateral Parliamentary Group to strengthen cooperation between the Austrian Parliament and parliaments of countries in South and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam.
On the multilateral level, the two countries' National Assemblies always share a common voice, coordinate and support each other at regional and international multilateral parliamentary forums, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership (ASEP).
The Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly suggested that the two sides increase delegation exchanges at all levels, especially at high levels, to create momentum for cooperation in all fields; continue to promote delegation exchanges between the two countries' legislative bodies, especially at high levels; and increase contacts, consultations, coordination and mutual support at multilateral parliamentary cooperation mechanisms.
Affirming that Vietnam always attaches importance to relations with Austria and the European Union, the Standing Vice President of the National Assembly expressed his hope that the Austrian Parliament will soon ratify the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), and have a voice to urge the European Council to soon remove the "yellow card" on Vietnam's seafood exports.
The Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly also asked Austria to continue supporting Vietnam's stance on maritime and aviation security and safety in the East Sea and the settlement of disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, for the common interests of countries in the international community, contributing to maintaining a peaceful, stable and developing environment in the region and the world.
Thanking the Permanent Vice President of the National Assembly for his suggestions on cooperation directions between the two countries, Minister Alexander Schallenberg affirmed that Austria is ready to cooperate with Vietnam in areas where the country has strengths.
The Austrian Foreign Minister also affirmed that Austria wishes to strengthen relations with Vietnam, Austria's leading important partner in Southeast Asia.
Agreeing with the proposals of the Permanent Vice President of the National Assembly, the Austrian Foreign Minister affirmed that Austria shares common concerns with Vietnam in geopolitical issues, especially regional stability for economic development. The Austrian Foreign Minister expressed his belief that with common views and visions, Austria and Vietnam are two friendly partners.
In that spirit, the Minister emphasized that bilateral policy exchanges, both through parliamentary channels and other channels, will continue to be dynamic in the coming time./.
