Since 1990, Mr. Than Van Bao (Tan Hiep village, Lien Hiep commune, Duc Trong district, Lam Dong province) has been attached to traditional crops such as tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers...
During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, many farmers' vegetable crops were not consumed. Meanwhile, Mr. Bao realized that the demand for flowers, growing flowers, and caring for flowers among many city residents had expanded. Thinking, learning, and visiting many gardeners for practical experience, Mr. Bao decided to grow roses and sell plants.
He shared: “Growing roses to harvest branches like Da Lat farmers, the climate of Duc Trong is really not very suitable. However, I find growing potted roses very suitable. Therefore, I have switched from growing la gai to growing roses in pots.”
Taking advantage of the greenhouse system available from growing vegetables, Mr. Than Van Bao improved it to grow roses. He said that growing roses is neither difficult nor easy. If you know the care techniques, the rose tree will be healthy, beautiful, popular with consumers and will last a long time.
Mr. Bao only chooses the care and distribution stage, not grafting roses. Instead, he cooperates with some farmers who specialize in grafting foreign rose buds onto wild rose roots. After the graft heals and the plant begins to grow new leaves, he imports the seeds and transfers them to a separate area for care.
According to Mr. Bao, each stage of the rose requires a different type of care. Therefore, he divides the planting area into small and large trees to ensure appropriate care.
Mr. Than Van Bao, a rose farmer, introduces potted rose products in Lien Hiep commune, Duc Trong district, Lam Dong.
According to Mr. Than Van Bao, different rose varieties also require different care. What makes Duc Trong area suitable for growing potted roses is the stable temperature, not too hot, not too cold.
After the grafting stage, the rose tree needs to be nurtured in a greenhouse, with proper care.
Mr. Bao said that growing roses outdoors also requires a period of nurturing in a greenhouse to look beautiful. Many small, ugly rose trees will be pruned, fertilized, and watered according to the appropriate regimen by the worker. The rose trees will quickly recover, bud, and be ready for sale.
A special thing about Mr. Than Van Bao is that he ensures the products from the garden to the warehouse. Instead of letting traders come to the garden to choose roses, he buys trucks and has his employees deliver the goods to the ornamental plant warehouses in and outside the Duc Trong area, all the way to Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc, and Binh Thuan.
Because of that, he understands the preferences and tastes of consumers in different regions, thereby orienting the right varieties and colors, such as tree size, flowering season, etc. According to Mr. Than Van Bao, the market's demand for growing roses is very large.
He also learned from experience, depending on the preferences and tastes of each market area to adjust. For example, in the Dong Nai area, during Christmas season, customers prefer small rose trees, small flowers, and colorful colors. During Tet season, customers prefer large trees, many flowers, healthy trees, and long-lasting display.
Also instead of choosing the high-end product segment, Mr. Bao chose the average potted rose segment for the majority of consumers. He provided that many rose trees in his garden cost only 30-35 thousand VND/tree. There are also high-priced products but they are not as popular as the average products.
After four years of switching from growing vegetables to growing persimmons, Mr. Than Van Bao has achieved positive results. Currently, he has 7 regular workers, and 15 more when the persimmon supply peaks.
He shared that every year, 2 hectares of roses bring him 1 billion VND after deducting expenses. It is not too high, only 500 million VND/ha/year, but in return, he creates many jobs for people around. And brings beautiful pots of roses to flower lovers.
Ms. Truong Thi Phuong - President of the Farmers' Association of Lien Hiep Commune, Duc Trong District, Lam Dong Province, assessed that not only is Mr. Than Van Bao a good farmer, he is also an active Farmers' Association President.
The farmers' movement in Tan Hiep village is always promoted and enthusiastically participates in movements to build new rural areas, maintain a green - clean - beautiful environment, encourage learning, encourage talents... all with the promotion of the enthusiastic and responsible branch president.
