Reviving after the storm
In early April, upon arriving in Thanh Thinh commune, we were astonished to see that just recently, Typhoon No. 3 had devastated Thanh Thinh – considered the "capital" of mulberry cultivation and silkworm farming in the district. The entire field was submerged in mud, and the remaining mulberry trees were either covered in mud or withered and dead. Yet now, Thanh Thinh has revived strongly; the mulberry fields are now covered in a lush green, and colorful butterfly-shaped flowers flutter in the wind along both sides of the road. In the mulberry fields, people are busily harvesting leaves.
Ms. Vu Thi Lan, from Lan Dinh village, Thanh Thinh commune, excitedly shared while quickly picking mulberry leaves: "My family has 1.2 acres of mulberry trees, and Typhoon No. 3 killed many of them. Fortunately, with the attention of the province and relevant ministries and departments, we have actively applied scientific and technical methods to care for and restore them. As a result, the entire mulberry plantation of my family has now revived. The mulberry trees seem to have been 'rejuvenated,' with large, thick leaves, and this is the second silkworm cycle my family is raising. We expect to earn nearly 200 million VND this year."
Thanh Thinh commune has nearly 300 hectares of mulberry trees – making it the largest area for mulberry cultivation and silkworm farming in Tran Yen district. Due to the impact of Typhoon No. 3, 100% of the commune's mulberry area was submerged, with nearly 50% severely affected. Immediately after the typhoon, the local government coordinated with relevant agencies, including the District Department of Agriculture and Environment, to inspect and assess the extent of the damage and propose appropriate solutions. For areas on higher ground where the trees could be saved, scientific and technical methods were applied to help the mulberry trees recover. For areas requiring replanting, soil improvement was considered. Thanh Thinh quickly restored the cultivated area to stabilize the lives of its people.
Expand the area for strawberry cultivation.
Over the years, mulberry cultivation has become a key economic sector in Thanh Thinh. In fact, mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing have proven highly effective, with each hectare yielding an average income of over 200 million VND per year. Mulberry trees are well-suited to the local climate, soil, and labor conditions. As a result, mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing have expanded, creating valuable marketable products, providing a stable income, and enriching the lives of farmers in Thanh Thinh.
To support households participating in the expansion and development of mulberry cultivation areas, the local authorities have organized numerous training courses and provided guidance on applying advanced scientific and technical methods for intensive mulberry cultivation. Simultaneously, the commune has collaborated with the district's agricultural department to transfer techniques to participating households, enabling them to adopt a model of silkworm rearing using wheeled trays that are easy to move and clean. When feeding the silkworms, they only need to pull the trays one by one, saving time and effort while ensuring hygiene.
Simultaneously, the company continues to implement the technique of raising silkworms on square wooden frames and collaborates with the Northern Silk and Mulberry Joint Stock Company - a business involved in developing mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, and cocoon product consumption in the area. By 2025, Thanh Thinh plans to fully utilize agricultural land to expand mulberry cultivation by 10 hectares, renovate and replace 26.5 hectares; achieve a silkworm cocoon production of 515 tons per year; and maintain and uphold OCOP certification for mulberry products, especially Viet Thanh mulberry wine.

Developing "green tourism"
Aiming to develop "green tourism," Thanh Thinh commune has collaborated with Tay Bac Silk Joint Stock Company to develop the project "Building a model of experiential tourism in mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, and silk weaving in Tran Yen district, giai đoạn 2024 - 2025". Accordingly, the locality has developed a master plan for the mulberry and silkworm experiential tourism area, a harmonious complex integrated with the natural landscape, within the overall experiential tourism ecosystem of the province. The model is a harmonious complex, combining tradition and modernity to help tourists, especially young people, learn more about the historical process of the traditional weaving industry, the process of making silk and other products from silkworms…
The experiential space will also help visitors better understand the cultural identity of the Tay and Muong ethnic groups in the area. Currently, Thanh Thinh has developed a master plan for an experiential tourism model focusing on mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, and silk weaving, with green spaces, cultural spaces, traditional spaces, and culinary spaces. Thanh Thinh also impresses visitors with opportunities to take photos, pick mulberries and leaves, and visit silkworm farms. Here, visitors can also enjoy products from mulberry trees such as mulberry tea, mulberry wine, mulberry syrup, and purchase products made from mulberry trees such as silk scarves.
To implement the project effectively, Thanh Thinh expanded village and inter-village roads from 3m to 5m and planted flowers along the roadsides, creating access routes to and from the mulberry fields, which was well received by the local people.
Mr. Tran Van Bac from Truc Dinh village said: "My family donated over 700 square meters of garden land to expand the village road. We also contributed money and labor to complete the stone slope at the beginning of the village and plant flowers along the route. We hope that the wide, clean, and beautiful road will make a good impression on tourists visiting and experiencing the locality."
In addition, the commune also encouraged people to plant Quan Am lotus in low-lying areas unsuitable for mulberry cultivation, while developing food services using local produce; expanding the production area of organic cinnamon and other organic products…
Comrade Nguyen Minh Thanh - Secretary of the Party Committee of Thanh Thinh commune, said: "In recent times, Thanh Thinh has been pursuing the goal of building new rural areas to develop tourism and using tourism development to develop the economy, improve the lives of the people, and contribute to building sustainable new rural areas. At the end of April, the commune will organize a tourism workshop so that people in the villages implementing the Project, including Lan Dinh, Truc Dinh, Phuc Dinh, and village 5 (formerly Dao Thinh commune), can learn about the methods and effectiveness of community tourism. Thanh Thinh will also "tell" the story so that tourists can learn about and discover the local OCOP products. Currently, the commune has completed the expansion of village and inter-village roads, planted 2km of flower-lined roads, and the silkworm farms have been cleaned up and tidied up. The commune has also sent officials to study experiential tourism models in some localities to implement the Project effectively."
Developing "green tourism" linked to leveraging the potential and advantages of local agriculture, traditional crafts, and ecological environment is considered a suitable direction in the current context of Thanh Thinh. We believe that in the not-too-distant future, the project "Building a model of experiential tourism in mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, and silk weaving in Tran Yen district, giai đoạn 2024 - 2025" will be completed, providing tourists with a new experience here.
Visitors to Thanh Thinh will then be able to freely pick strawberries, take photos amidst the dreamy green strawberry fields, in the cool, fresh air, and have interesting experiences from the strawberry fields and silkworm farms to understand the historical process of traditional weaving, the process of making silk and other products from silkworms and cinnamon trees. Visitors will also experience the rich cultural identity of the Tay and Muong people here. This prosperous, warm, clean, and relaxing homeland of green strawberries and golden cocoons will increasingly attract visitors from afar.
