Expectation of breakthrough
Mr. Huynh Quang Hung - Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee said: In 2023, the locality exceeded 9/23 targets and achieved 10/23 targets. Of which, there are some highlights such as total budget revenue of over 7,739 billion VND, reaching 138.69% of the plan. This is the first time Phu Quoc's total budget revenue has reached over 7,000 billion VND, contributing to nearly 50% of the province's total revenue. The total number of tourists continues to be high, contributing to the overall success of 2023, with 5.7 million visitors, accounting for 67% of the total number of tourists in the province, and many other important targets, contributing to the province's economic growth rate of 6.79%.
In January 2024, the total number of tourists is estimated at 502,500, of which 82,615 are international visitors; 201,036 are overnight visitors; 301,522 are day visitors (tourist areas and attractions). Revenue from accommodation and catering services is estimated at VND 1,599 billion.
Up to now, Phu Quoc has 321 valid investment projects in planning areas with a land use area of about 10,652.80 hectares; total investment capital of about 412,657.19 billion VND (equivalent to 18 billion USD).
Mr. Huynh Quang Hung added that the estimated budget revenue for 2024 is 8,900 billion VND; the plan for 2024 is to welcome 3.5 million visitors to the Pearl Island, of which 0.5 million are international visitors; total revenue from accommodation and food services is 15,441 billion VND. However, there are also many objective factors affecting the development of local tourism.
Mr. Lam Minh Thanh - Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee affirmed: 2024 is identified as a year of acceleration and breakthrough, which is of special significance in successfully implementing the 5-year socio-economic development plan 2021-2025. The locality has set a growth target of 6.79%, striving for 9.5% to achieve the target of the whole term.
At the same time, Mr. Lam Minh Thanh also emphasized that for Phu Quoc, the Provincial People's Committee expects a breakthrough, especially mobilizing social investment capital in the city to reach VND 24,000 billion or more, attracting at least 10 new projects. Regarding tourism, it is expected to attract 6.5 million tourists to contribute to achieving the target of 11.2 million tourists in the province, making tourism truly a spearhead economic sector. It is necessary to focus on quickly implementing solutions to restore and develop tourism; building a friendly and civilized tourism image.
Become a spearhead economy
Sharing with reporters, Mr. Huynh Quang Hung - Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee said: Connecting international flights to Phu Quoc is also one of the factors promoting tourism development from markets such as: Thailand, Malaysia, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, Poland, USA, Mongolia... Besides, Vietjet Air opened a flight route between Phu Quoc - Taiwan, operating a frequency of 7 round trips/day, creating more opportunities for local tourism.
“The locality is implementing a series of activities to stimulate and develop tourism “I Love Phu Quoc – I Love Phu Quoc” on a national scale and reaching the world level according to the motto “unique – professional – safe – clean, beautiful – civilized” Mr. Hung informed.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Bui Quoc Thai - Director of Kien Giang Province Department of Tourism emphasized: Currently, the department is developing a project to build Phu Quoc into a center of high-quality eco-tourism, sea and island tourism of national and international stature. At the same time, the tourism industry is restructuring to meet the requirements of developing it into a spearhead economic sector of the province.
Meanwhile, Ms. Quang Xuan Lua - Director of the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion of Kien Giang province affirmed: It is necessary to promote and introduce potentials and strengths; tourist areas, destinations, tours, routes and tourism activities, tourism services of enterprises; connect with major provinces and cities in the country, form links of tours and tourist routes of the key economic region of the Mekong Delta; combine with promotional activities abroad to call for investment in tourism development and attract tourists. Enhance the effectiveness of tourism promotion activities towards improving quality and professionalism, focusing on key points and ensuring competitiveness in the process of international economic integration.
“Building tourism brands, strengthening tourism promotion in the direction of professionalization and regional linkage; developing tourism associated with protecting resources, landscapes and the environment; participating in international tourism fairs; researching the market and assessing the province's tourism potential to select distribution channels and apply appropriate forms of promoting tourism products, services and destinations. Effectively implementing tourism promotion in traditional and potential markets at home and abroad; expanding linkages with provinces and cities nationwide, developing road, sea and air tourism routes, and border gates,” said Ms. Quang Xuan Lua.
Mr. Nguyen Luu Trung - Vice Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee emphasized: Building Phu Quoc tourism brand with its own characteristics, strong attraction with diverse tourism activities and attractions, abundant accommodation sources, and easy access. Strengthening connection and sustainable use of ecological resources for tourism development.
Developing spiritual tourism, promoting the development of ecotourism under the forest canopy to maximize the ecological landscape values of Phu Quoc National Park. National forest and protective forest areas are exploited with tourism activities such as: fishing; community education; scientific research; picnics; walking, strolling in the forest; sightseeing; adventure sports such as: paragliding, mountain climbing; forest tours; ecological relaxation in the forest. Developing the provision of tourism services combined with domestic and international conferences and seminars. Agricultural tourism and cultural tourism: Taking advantage of and combining agricultural and local cultural elements into the visitor experience.
