During the Lunar New Year holiday of 2024 in Thua Thien Hue province, favorable weather conditions led to vibrant cultural, sports , and tourism events, attracting tens of thousands of locals and tourists. The total number of visitors to the ancient capital of Hue during and after the Lunar New Year increased significantly.
In the early days of the Lunar New Year of the Dragon (2014), Hue attracted a large number of tourists. Several travel agencies organized tours bringing groups of visitors from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and other cities to Hue. From the Lunar New Year until mid-February 2024, Thua Thien Hue province welcomed over 115,000 visitors to its historical sites and scenic spots. Tourism revenue exceeded 160 billion VND.
Ms. Tran Ngoc Bich, a tourist from the United States visiting the Hue Imperial Citadel, shared her feelings about visiting Hue at the beginning of the new year: “I came to Vietnam from the United States, traveled from the South to the North, and then visited Hue, seeing the structures that I learned about in history. I really enjoyed it. If I have the opportunity to come back again, I will visit more places in detail. When traveling independently, I will visit more places.”
To facilitate visits and spring excursions for locals and tourists, from the 1st to the 3rd day of the Lunar New Year (Year of the Dragon), the Hue Imperial Citadel Relics Conservation Center offered free admission to all historical sites under its management. On the 3rd day of the Lunar New Year, the busiest day, the sites welcomed 49,000 visitors.
Ms. Tran Thanh Huyen, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City visiting Hue, said: “Upon arriving in Hue, I noticed that the number of tourists this year is quite high compared to previous years. Despite the difficult economic situation, I found the tourist attractions quite lively and crowded. Firstly, regarding the cuisine, I found Hue's food very appealing, with many traditional dishes and unique characteristics of Central Vietnam and Hue in particular. Secondly, the city boasts many historical architectural sites, beautiful natural landscapes, and especially the characteristic tranquility of Hue. That's why tourists want to come to Hue to find peace and quiet.”
At the Hue Imperial Citadel, during the Tet holiday, many activities are held as part of the 2024 tourism stimulus program. These include traditional art performances, offered free of charge to visitors. Many localities in Thua Thien Hue province also organize festivals rich in traditional cultural identity, attracting a large number of locals and tourists. These festivals contribute to preserving and spreading the traditional cultural values of the ancient capital. Many festivals, such as the Ceremony of Erecting and Lowering the New Year's Pole, the Huyen Tran Temple Festival, the Thu Le wrestling festival, and the Lang Sinh wrestling festival, have become cultural tourism products, attracting a large number of tourists to Hue.
Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Imperial Citadel Conservation Center, said that the Hue heritage site currently welcomes more than 10,000 visitors daily. “This year, the number of visitors is almost double that of last year, reaching 105,000 during the three days of Tet (Lunar New Year), and the average number of visitors in the following days is also 14,000-15,000. We have prepared very carefully to welcome visitors. Firstly, we are showcasing two important palaces, Kien Trung Palace and Thai Hoa Palace, along with experiential activities, art games, performances, and services characteristic of the Imperial Palace. Visitors highly appreciate the attractiveness of Hue this year.”
Visiting Hue during the Lunar New Year, most tourists are impressed by the interactive programs and traditional cultural experiences offered to welcome them. The spring celebrations in the ancient capital of Hue meet the needs of both tourists and the local community.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Director of the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Department of Tourism, said that Thua Thien Hue province has a policy of waiving entrance fees for domestic tourists for the first three days of the year. This is also a very effective way to stimulate tourism, attracting both domestic and international tourists to Thua Thien Hue during Tet.
“During the traditional Vietnamese Lunar New Year, Hue attracts a large number of tourists, both domestic and international, because this is the peak season for inbound tourism. Currently, domestic tourists, especially from major cities, are organizing tours to Hue for sightseeing and experiences. Destination businesses, such as hotels, are implementing various forms of hospitality to welcome guests during the Lunar New Year to create a positive impression of Hue and its people,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc.
