Regarding the incident in which a Western tourist complained that a taxi driver charged her 500,000 VND for a distance of about 200m (from 114 Tran Nhat Duat Street to 9b Cho Gao Street, not 50m as initially reported) in Hanoi's Old Quarter, Ms. M. (French nationality) said that she and her husband were involved in the incident.
According to the female tourist, this was the first time she and her husband had come to Vietnam for tourism. They had come to Vietnam about a week ago with a schedule to visit Tam Coc (Ninh Binh), Sa Pa (Lao Cai), and Hanoi.
This morning, they returned to Hanoi before boarding a train to Cat Ba (Hai Phong), planning to go on a cruise. According to the guest, on the night of May 11, the two took a bus from Sa Pa to the bus company's office at 114 Tran Nhat Duat (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi).
There, they took a taxi to No. 9 Cho Gao. "When we arrived, the driver locked the car door and asked us to pay 500,000 VND to get out of the car," Ms. M. said.
In fact, the distance from 114 Tran Nhat Duat to 9 Cho Gao is less than 200m. After the driver left, the husband discovered that he had forgotten his wallet and passport. The taxi driver returned to return the belongings and demanded an additional 500,000 VND.
"We had to pay more to get our property back. My husband and I are very upset," she said, adding that she sent pictures of the taxi, the driver, and the incident, and asked the tour guide to report it to the authorities. The female tourist said the incident had affected her and her husband's psychology.
Previously, speaking to Tuoi Tre Online, Mr. S. (a tour operator in Hanoi and the person who posted the incident on social media) said that in the early morning of the same day, the two guests ended their trip to Sa Pa (Lao Cai). They were dropped off by the bus company at Tran Nhat Duat Street.
"According to the plan, these two guests will start using our tour starting in Hanoi. We have carefully instructed the guests to wait at the bus station and someone will come to pick them up. However, they have called a taxi to the departure point themselves," said Mr. S.
Then the two tourists took a taxi to No. 9 Cho Gao Street. The actual distance measured for the above route is about 200m.
"The taxi driver took 500,000 VND. Then the passenger forgot his passport in the car, so he came back and asked for another 500,000 VND," said Mr. S., adding that the tourists shared that they felt "defrauded" by the bad experience. The two tourists then wrote a petition to the police.
