Floating on the Pai River is usually held from November to May of the following year when the water level is low, around 50cm or waist-deep, and is prohibited during the rainy season as the water level can reach 2-3m.
According to the Bangkok Post, this activity mainly attracts foreign tourists, especially tourists from Europe who want to immerse themselves in nature to relax. Since the beginning of the year, the small town in Mae Hong Soon province, northern Thailand, has welcomed more than 40,000 foreign tourists.
From here, the lives of local people are more or less affected by the inappropriate behavior of tourists visiting the town.
The owner of a resort in Pai has complained to local authorities about the situation of alcohol being secretly sold to foreign guests, disguised in plastic water bottles to avoid detection.
In addition, after playing the "lazy river", many foreign tourists continued to wear swimsuits around town. This behavior made the locals extremely angry because it disrespected the local culture.
Most recently, police have received reports of tourists sneaking into resorts to have promiscuous sex, causing outrage in society.
In response to these incidents, Mae Hong Soon Governor Chucheep Pongchai has instructed relevant agencies and businesses to quickly implement measures to manage tourism in Pai, especially the floating activities on the river for foreign tourists. The goal is to prevent unscrupulous behavior from continuing to tarnish the image of the town.
In addition, other measures such as a complete ban on alcoholic beverages in river activities and dress codes for tourists to ensure respect for local culture will also be applied and closely monitored.
Deputy Governor Mae Hong Son will visit Pai town this week to attend a meeting with relevant agencies to further organize and establish tourism measures in Pai.
In 2022, there will be about 1.5 million tourists visiting Mae Hong Son.
The Mae Hong Son Tourism Department is actively promoting the province with local village experiences, health-enhancing workouts and a journey from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son via the “dragon trail” of 4,088 bends on the highway.
