According to information from the official website of Bali tourism, authorities of the island known as the "resort paradise" in Indonesia have begun to impose a tourist tax of 150,000 rupiah (about 9.6 USD).

The tourist tax was introduced to tackle overtourism on the popular island. Bali officials said the revenue from the tax would be used to manage tourism and preserve Balinese culture, invest in environmental clean-up efforts and disaster management, and improve the quality of service infrastructure, ensuring safety and comfort for tourists.

The tax will be applied to foreign tourists coming to Bali. Some cases are exempted from the tax, including: diplomatic and official passport holders; air crew and sea crew; holders of temporary residence cards in Indonesia (KITAS) or permanent residence cards in Indonesia (KITAP); holders of family reunification visas, golden visas or student visas; and those issued with other types of visas for non-tourism purposes.

Bali authorities advise tourists to pay this tax before arriving in Bali through the official Bali tourism website: https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id or through the LoveBali smart application.

Before the new regulations were implemented, Bali had pledged to crack down on misbehaving tourists following a series of incidents involving foreign tourists showing disrespect for local culture.

The island attracts millions of foreign tourists each year and is trying to capitalize on its appeal to boost revenue and protect its landscape. According to official figures, more than 2 million tourists visited Bali in 2023, and the government believes the new tax will not reduce the number of tourists coming to Bali.
