Widespread heat in May
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, ENSO (an acronym for the phenomenon of abnormal warming of the surface sea water - El Nino and the phenomenon of abnormal cooling of the surface sea water - La Nina) is currently in neutral conditions, with the standard deviation of sea surface temperature in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean at approximately the same level as the average of many years in the first week of April.
From May to July 2025, the ENSO phenomenon is likely to maintain a neutral state with a probability of 70-90%. With the above trend, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that in the coming time, the weather situation across the country will have many fluctuations.
Sharing with reporters, expert Mai Van Khiem, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that in the immediate future, during the transitional season (April and May), extreme weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind may occur, especially in the late afternoon.
In addition, in April and May, the possibility of widespread heat waves can also have adverse impacts on people's health, increase the risk of fires and forest fires, and affect production and daily life.
Commenting on the weather developments with a "more distant" trend, expert Hoang Phuc Lam - Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that with the above ENSO conditions, it is forecasted that heat waves are likely to appear nationwide in May 2025.
From June, the heat wave tends to decrease in the Central Highlands and the South. In the North and Central regions, the heat wave is forecast to last until August; from September, the heat wave gradually decreases, the intensity of the heat wave is equivalent to the average of many years in the same period.
The average temperature across the country in the period from May to July 2025 is generally approximately the same as the average of many years; in the Northwest region, the temperature is 0.5-1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years in the same period.
During the period from August to September 2025, the average temperature across the country is also forecast to be 0.5-1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years in the same period. In October, it is generally at a level approximately equal to the average of many years in the same period.
Increased dangerous weather events
Along with the hot weather, expert Hoang Phuc Lam said that from May to July 2025, storms and tropical depressions are likely to operate in the East Sea and affect our country at a level approximately equal to the average of many years (specifically, about 3.2 storms will appear in the East Sea; 1.2 storms will make landfall).
Notably, during the forecast period, there is a possibility of dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind across the country; especially during cold spells during the transitional season. It is forecasted that from May to July 2025, moderate to heavy rains are likely to occur in the Northern, North Central, Central Highlands and Southern regions.
With the above trend, Mr. Lam said that the national hydrometeorological agency forecasts that storms, tropical depressions and the southwest monsoon are likely to cause strong winds and large waves affecting the activities of ships.
In the next period from August to October 2025, Mr. Lam said that the ENSO phenomenon is likely to continue to remain in a neutral state with a probability of 55-65%. Accordingly, the activity of storms and tropical depressions in the East Sea and landfall will be at a level equivalent to the average of many years (specifically, about 6.8 storms will occur in the East Sea; of which 2.8 storms will make landfall).
With the above climate conditions, Mr. Lam forecasts that there is a possibility of dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind across the country; there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rains across the country.
According to Mr. Lam, tropical depressions and the southwest monsoon are likely to cause strong winds and large waves that could affect activities in the East Sea; heat waves, heavy rains, thunderstorms, tornadoes and lightning could negatively affect production activities and public health./.
