GIC project contributes to capacity building for local officials and cooperatives

STO - On March 21, at the Department of Agricultural Product Quality Management and Rural Development of Soc Trang province (Department of Agriculture and Environment of Soc Trang province), a conference was held to summarize the activities of the Green Innovation Centers Project of Soc Trang province (GIC). Comrade Tran Hoang Dung - Head of the Department of Agricultural Product Quality Management and Rural Development of Soc Trang province and Deputy Director of the GIC Project of Soc Trang province chaired the conference. Attending the conference were Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Son - Senior Coordinator of the GIZ Project; leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of districts and cities; and rice farming cooperatives in the whole province.

After 3 years of implementing the Regional Project "Green Innovation Centers", phase 2021 - 2024 in Soc Trang province, the project has supported rice cooperatives in management and operation of cooperatives; production and business planning; financial management; linking companies and enterprises consuming rice. Organized more than 300 business training courses for farmers and cooperatives in the project area; organized training on rice cultivation techniques 3 reductions 3 increases, 1 must 5 reductions. Guided producers to use certified seeds to reduce seeds, reduce fertilizers, reduce pesticides, reduce water, reduce losses, reduce greenhouse gas emissions; guided field monitoring during the production process throughout the growing season. Built a demonstration model of sustainable rice cultivation techniques, to create conditions and opportunities for farmers who are members of the cooperative to have a place to study, share experiences and apply new techniques. Implement 6 rice cultivation models at 6 cooperatives in 4 districts/towns, with an area of 30 hectares, with 27 households in the project area participating. Organize propaganda to guide people on how to handle straw and reuse straw by-products, to reduce production costs, minimize environmental pollution, and adapt to climate change for farmers and cooperative members in the project area...

Comrade Tran Hoang Dung shared that the implementation of the GIC Project in Soc Trang province has contributed to supporting and developing agriculture in the province in a sustainable manner, promoting the replication of innovative initiatives; at the same time, helping farmers understand market-oriented production, producing products that the market needs rather than producing according to their own ideas. In the coming time, the GIC Project will coordinate with relevant units to continue supporting cooperatives and enterprises to participate in international trade fairs and exhibitions to sign contracts and services. Implement a program to raise awareness for retailers and consumers about the benefits of complying with quality and sustainable rice standards. Promote the application of innovation for sustainable agricultural business models. Provide policy support and communication to replicate the application of innovation. Propose and disseminate policies to promote innovation in the agricultural sector; Develop and implement communication programs to introduce and promote the content and results of the GIC Project...
