According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the low pressure area in the West is continuing to develop and expand to the Southeast. Today (May 16), the mountainous area in the West from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen will be hot with the highest temperature of 35-37 degrees, some places over 38 degrees.
In the Northern Delta, Southern Son La, Hoa Binh and Southern regions, the temperature will decrease, with about 35-36 degrees, some places above 36 degrees.
However, meteorological experts note that from tomorrow (May 17), the North is likely to enter a widespread heat wave that will last until early next week (around May 22). This could be the longest heat wave in the North since the beginning of the year.
The characteristic of this period is that the hot low will be centered right over the Northeast region. Tomorrow, the heat in this region will increase to 35-37 degrees, some places will be over 37 degrees. In the Northwest and from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen, the heat will continue to develop strongly to 35-38 degrees, some places will be over 39 degrees.
The meteorological agency also recorded the highest temperature in the capital Hanoi this time at 38 degrees on May 18 and May 22, which is a very hot level. On the remaining days, the temperature fluctuates between 35-37 degrees. The time with high temperature during the day is around 11-17h.
It is worth noting that, according to meteorological experts, the published temperature is only the temperature measured in the meteorological tent. In reality, the temperature felt outside will be much higher due to the large heat absorption from concrete roads, asphalt roads, high-rise buildings, vehicles, etc. in large cities.
For the South, these days are also affected by heat. Today, the highest temperature in this area is 35-36 degrees, the intensity is not as severe as in the Northern and Central provinces. However, from May 18, the heat here will gradually ease as the rainy season begins.
Previously, speaking with VietNamNet reporter , Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Mai Van Khiem said that the average temperature in 2023 will be about 0.5-1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years.
"Normally, a heat wave will last about 3-5 days, but this year it may be longer, about 5-7 days, especially in the Central region. There is a high possibility of severe and especially severe heat. During each heat wave, the highest temperature in the North is about 37-38 degrees; in the Central region, about 37-39 degrees, in some places it is higher, from 40-42 degrees," Mr. Khiem commented.
Mr. Khiem said the peak of the heat is forecasted around June-July in the North, and June-August in the Central region.
In addition, in the El Nino (warm phase) bulletin, meteorological experts noted that this phenomenon is likely to appear in July-August and may last until early 2024, causing more intense heat. The winter is more distinct than the summer, with southern regions being more affected than the north.
