Burning leaves easily ignites forest fires.

After Typhoon No. 3, nearly an acre of acacia trees belonging to Mrs. Ha were broken and scattered all over the hillside. Regretting the loss of the trees and the wasted effort, Mrs. Ha took advantage of the few sunny days to hire people to cut down the trees and clear the garden. She sold the large trees to carpenters, and gathered the smaller branches to bring home for firewood. As for the pile of dry acacia leaves, she asked her son to use his weekend off to gather them into bags and bring them down to the house to burn. Thinking his mother was too busy with work, Mr. Minh, Mrs. Ha's son, said:

- Why bother with firewood and dry leaves, Mom? Burning them downstairs would just create smoke and dust, and it would be a waste of time. Let's burn them right here; it'll be more convenient and save us the trouble of carrying them around.

Seeing that her son didn't understand her intentions, Mrs. Ha explained:

- Burning here is convenient, but Mom is being cautious. Dry acacia branches burn slowly. If we burn here, the embers will fly into Uncle Toan's acacia grove next door, which hasn't been cleared yet, and then spread to the ancient chestnut forest—then "distant water can't put out a nearby fire."

"Mom, you're worrying too much. The forest rangers are patrolling all the time. Besides, the chestnut forest is quite far from our house, so it won't catch fire," Minh said.

- We can't be careless, son. It was just last year, not so long ago. Just for convenience, because he was too lazy to clean up the garden after pruning the acacia trees, your father didn't gather the dry branches and leaves and bring them down to dispose of them. The prolonged dry weather caused a section of the garden to catch fire.

Listening to her mother-in-law and husband talking, Linh, the daughter-in-law, added:

- Mom's right, brother. The weather has been very dry these past few days, burning trees and leaves here would be very dangerous. There was just a forest fire in Kinh Mon.

"Okay, then later, Dad and I will go and tell Uncle Toan and Uncle Hung to tidy up the garden as well, Mom," Minh understood and eagerly got to work.
