The dollar continued to fall despite dovish comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and solid labor data. Powell warned that persistent inflation amid an economic downturn could lead to stagflation, providing temporary support for the dollar.

Still, the market focused on growing expectations for a rate cut. CPI fell to 2.4% year-on-year in March, while core CPI fell to 2.8%, both below forecasts. Meanwhile, initial jobless claims fell to 215,000, but continuing claims rose to 1.885 million, pointing to tightness in the labor market.
Traders are pricing in a total of 86 basis points of Fed cuts by the end of 2025, with the first move forecast to come in July, putting downward pressure on the dollar despite Powell's more cautious stance, according to CME's FedWatch tool.
The greenback held steady amid growing concerns about the economic impact of tariffs on the United States. Investors are closely watching developments in U.S. trade negotiations. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized Powell for being too slow in cutting interest rates.
US President Donald Trump said on April 18 that China has made many moves. Speaking at the White House, President Trump said that China has proactively contacted many times since Washington raised tariffs on Beijing's goods to 145%. "I don't want to raise tariffs on China. If tariffs on China go up, people won't buy," he stressed. The US leader expressed optimism that a trade deal with China could be reached within three to four weeks.
Earlier, in a post on the social network Truth Social on April 17, President Donald Trump expressed optimism about his recent and upcoming trade negotiations with a number of countries, including Mexico and Japan. The US leader also revealed that China is among the countries that want to meet with his administration.
“I had a very productive call with the President of Mexico. I also met with the highest level Trade Representatives of Japan. It was a very productive meeting. Every country, including China, wanted to meet! Today it was Italy!” he wrote.
Previously, on April 15, the White House released a statement saying that China now faces tariffs of up to 245%.
