On the night of May 12, due to the influence of strengthening cold air, widespread thunderstorms occurred in the province, causing much damage to people's houses and property.

According to statistics from the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue, storms and floods occurred in the districts of Bao Thang, Van Ban, Bat Xat and Bac Ha, causing 119 houses to have their roofs blown off or be flooded (Van Ban 104, Bat Xat 6, Bao Thang 7, Bac Ha 2 houses). The total area of rice, corn and crops damaged was 49.35 hectares, and planted forests were 3 hectares.

The total estimated damage caused by storms and floods in the province is more than 6.2 billion VND, of which Van Ban and Bao Thang districts suffered the most damage.
In Van Ban district
On the night of May 12, thunderstorms and floods affected 8 communes and 1 town. As a result, 104 houses had their roofs blown off or landslides entered their houses (Khanh Yen town: 7 houses; Lang Giang commune: 17 houses; Vo Lao: 6 houses; Khanh Yen Thuong: 28 houses; Liem Phu: 8 houses; Hoa Mac: 8 houses; Nam Dang: 14 houses; Nam Tha: 16 houses; Nam Xay: 2 houses). In addition, floods caused 17.8 hectares of corn and 4.3 hectares of crops and forestry trees to be flooded and broken.

Regarding traffic infrastructure and public works, the flood caused the roof to be blown off and the surrounding wall of Hoa Mac Secondary School and Mai Hong 2 Kindergarten in Tan An Commune to collapse; and landslides on some rural roads in Vo Lao and Son Thuy Communes.

Estimated damage caused by storms and floods in Van Ban district is 5.4 billion VND.
At Bao Thang
According to information from the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue of Bao Thang district, on the evening of May 12, thunderstorms swept through the communes of Ban Can, Thai Nien, Ban Phiet, Gia Phu, Son Ha and Phong Hai Farm town... causing some houses to have their roofs blown off and trees to fall on cars.

According to initial statistics, the storm caused the roofs of 7 households in Ban Cam and Gia Phu communes to be blown off; lightning struck a house in Ban Cam commune, damaging electrical equipment; fortunately there were no human casualties.
The storm and heavy rain also flooded 5.3 hectares of rice; damaged 9.6 hectares of corn and other crops; 0.3 hectares of aquaculture ponds broke their banks; many trees along National Highway 70 in Phong Hai Farm Town, Ban Cam Commune, Ban Phiet were broken, causing traffic jams. The storm also blew off the roof and damaged property at Bao Thang High School No. 1 and Hoa Dao Kindergarten in Pho Lu Town.
In particular, at Km25, National Highway 70, the drainage system was blocked, flooding a section of road more than 100 m long, paralyzing traffic for nearly an hour.
Immediately after the storms and floods, local authorities mobilized militia, commune police and youth volunteers to help affected households move their belongings and people to safety; the electricity sector and the National Highway 70 management and maintenance unit brought machinery and manpower to areas with fallen trees to clean up and erect poles to ensure safety for vehicles.
It is forecasted that in the coming days, unusual weather situations may continue to occur, so localities need to be on guard against tornadoes, hail, lightning, flash floods and strong winds that can cause damage to houses, property and affect human lives.
