Storm No. 3 with strong winds and heavy rains caused damage to many crop areas and aquaculture ponds of farmers in Dong Hung district, many of which were just beginning to harvest. Despite their grief, farmers are making efforts to overcome the consequences of the storm to stabilize and develop production.
To save her family's tilapia pond, Ms. Pham Thi Que, Dong Cuong commune, reduced the amount of food, disinfected the water, and increased the fish's resistance.
Present at the specialized fields and dike banks of the farmers in Hong Bach commune, we could not help but be surprised and saddened by the desolation and desolation of the squash trellises ready for harvest and the banana gardens knocked down by the storm.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuyen, Hong Bach commune shared: My family grows 6 sao of green squash, and the squash is starting to be harvested at this time. I had just sold about 2 million VND when storm No. 3 hit, causing 50% of the trellis to collapse, the squash to be flooded, and the fruit to be completely rotten. The leaves and tops of the remaining 3 sao were all broken by the storm and withered. My family is focusing on reinforcing the trellis, taking care of the squash to harvest more fruit, which is good, otherwise we will destroy it and prepare the land for winter crops. We are asking the government to support seeds for us to plant a new crop to make up for the loss of this summer-autumn squash crop.
Standing stunned in front of his banana garden that was completely destroyed by storm No. 3, Mr. Do Thanh Trung, Hong Bach commune sadly said: The strong wind completely destroyed 4,000 banana trees that were expected to be harvested during Tet. Waiting for the water to recede, the family organized to cut down the fallen and damaged banana trees, prepare the land, and plant a new batch of bananas. The family's damage amounted to nearly 500 million VND, so we hope the province and district will take measures to support us farmers to reduce the damage.
This summer-autumn crop, farmers in Hong Bach commune planted 55 hectares of vegetables, some areas of melons, cucumbers and vegetables have been harvested; 20 hectares of squash have begun to be harvested, 20 hectares of bananas are bearing fruit. The impact of storm No. 3 caused 50% of the squash trellis area to collapse, squash plants to be crushed and killed, and 90% of the banana area to break and fall.
To support farmers in overcoming the damage, Bach Dang Agricultural Service Cooperative, Hong Bach Commune, has organized to clear the flow, pump and drain water to prevent flooding for vegetables, mobilize and guide farmers to strengthen squash trellis, focus on fertilizing the area of crops that can still be saved for early recovery. The Cooperative has also organized for farmers to register new crop varieties to proactively plant the next crop, and at the same time, proposed to superiors to support varieties for farmers to produce.
Returning to the greenhouse melon growing model of Mr. Pham Van Tai, Phong Chau commune, we were surprised to see that the previously lush, fruit-laden cucumber garden was now desolate.
Mr. Tai held back his emotions and shared: In the greenhouse, I grow 3,500 cucumber plants, earning 1.5 million VND per day, but the strong wind blew away 200m2 of the raincoat roof, the frame and trellis were broken in many places. The family is buying raw materials, hiring workers to re-hang the trellis, rebuilding the greenhouse frame, destroying all the damaged cucumbers, treating the soil by mixing it with rice husk ash, coconut fiber, and organic phosphate fertilizer to make the soil loose and nutritious, and preparing quality seeds to plant another crop of cucumbers. I hope that the authorities and sectors will create favorable conditions in terms of capital so that the family can soon restore production.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuyen, Hong Bach commune, tries to find the remaining pumpkins under the trellis that was destroyed by the storm.
Storm No. 3 not only caused damage to vegetable growers but also flooded many aquaculture areas, causing billions of dong in damage.
Ms. Pham Thi Que, Dong Cuong commune, said: 13 tons of perch, 10 tons of frog meat, 20,000 baby frogs are growing well. Although the family has proactively taken preventive measures, storm No. 3 caused heavy rain that flooded the entire pond, a large amount of fish and frogs spilled out. The rainwater was acidic and the power outage caused about 1.5 quintals of fish and frogs to die from lack of oxygen per day. To save the frogs and fish, I had to hire 5 workers to scoop water from the river to replace the water in the pond; reduce the amount of food; kill harmful bacteria with probiotics to reduce toxic gases in the pond; feed the frogs with garlic yeast and antibiotics to prevent diarrhea... The family wants to export the frogs and fish, but it is difficult because now there are many sellers and few buyers.
Farmers are reinforcing the storm-damaged greenhouse frame in preparation for planting a new crop of cucumbers.
Due to the impact of the storm, 6,500/11,000 hectares of winter-spring rice were tilted and collapsed, of which about 500 hectares were collapsed; causing damage to 100 hectares of vegetables, over 80 hectares of aquaculture, over 5,600 poultry...
Mr. Nguyen Van Truong, Chairman of the District People's Committee, said: In the face of the complicated developments of the flood situation, the District People's Committee directed all levels, sectors, units and localities to focus on overcoming damage, implementing measures to respond to heavy rain and floods on the river to support people to minimize damage and quickly restore production. Organize the operation of Hau Thuong pumping station, Cong Lap pumping station to drain water for rice, vegetables and aquaculture areas. Mobilize forces and means to organize the dredging of the flow to drain water as quickly as possible, prioritizing quick pumping and drainage for areas of rice, vegetables and aquaculture ponds that are heavily flooded and difficult to drain. Encourage people to tie up areas of fallen rice; abandon damaged areas of crops; take care of, prevent flooding, prevent and control pests and diseases for the remaining areas of plants and animals according to the instructions of the relevant agencies for plants to recover quickly. The agricultural sector has a plan to promptly support people in consuming agricultural products when needed; Prepare seeds and animals to serve farmers in raising and planting new crops. Localities strengthen management, prevent shortage of agricultural materials, ensure the quality of agricultural materials to serve farmers in production.
