Improve the quality of agricultural products

Doing business in the Central Highlands, Mr. Phan Thanh Kien is always concerned about the story of good harvest but low price, good price but bad harvest of local people. Therefore, in 2019, he decided to go to Que Long to find a way to support the output of agricultural products.

Mr. Kien shared that if only raw agricultural products are sold, traders will certainly squeeze and lower prices. However, through deep processing and canning, the value and brand of agricultural products will be enhanced.

After many years of research and learning from experts in the field of canned food production, in early 2024, Mr. Kien invested in a machinery system worth about 500 million VND for trial operation. Mr. Kien's first two product lines are canned straw mushrooms and canned Deo Le bantam chicken.

“Straw mushrooms are grown by local people using organic and safe methods. Deo Le bamboo chickens have a brand name in the market and are known by many people. Canning is convenient, can be preserved for a long time, and can easily reach many markets, especially for Quang people living far from home, who can enjoy local specialties everywhere,” said Mr. Kien.

After preliminary processing, the chicken will be braised with lemongrass, and the mushrooms will be stir-fried. After processing, the food will be put into galvanized iron cans and the gas will be removed. Using modern machinery, the cans will be seamed, tightly sealing the food and increasing aesthetics.

Finally, the canned food will be put into a sterilization oven at 121 degrees Celsius, ensuring food safety and hygiene. According to the evaluation results of the food inspection unit, Mr. Kien's 200-gram canned product has a shelf life of about 1 year.

In 2024, canned straw mushrooms and canned Deo Le chicken under the Deo Le Food brand will be introduced by Mr. Kien at trade promotion programs inside and outside the province. Mr. Kien said that this market research phase is a major factor in shaping the product.

He will consult with customers to adjust the seasoning, design and packaging. At the same time, he will approach potential distribution channels and move towards mass production.

“The biggest success during the market research period is that the product received support from a large number of customers. The canned Deo Le bantam chicken product was recognized as a 3-star OCOP product.

Mega Market Da Nang Supermarket and Co.opMart Tam Ky Supermarket have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding to bring this canned product into their business product list" - Mr. Kien shared.

Link with farmers

The family of Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet in Que Minh commune, Que Son has been growing straw mushrooms for many years, but still cannot avoid being forced to lower prices by traders. Every rainy season, traders lower mushroom prices, sometimes by 4-5 times in just one night. Unstable output and income make her not interested in expanding production.

In 2024, Ms. Tuyet will cooperate with Deo Le Agricultural Cooperative, directed by Mr. Phan Thanh Kien, to purchase straw mushrooms. After harvesting, the mushrooms will be transferred to the Cooperative for canned food production.

Ms. Tuyet shared that straw mushrooms have a very short shelf life in normal environments. For a long time, people have mainly dried or frozen them to use longer.

With Mr. Kien's canning method, mushrooms can not only be preserved for a long time but also retain the delicious flavor of straw mushrooms. This is a new direction for Mr. Kien, but also opens up opportunities for farmers to develop production.

Currently, Deo Le Agricultural Cooperative cooperates with 7 mushroom growers and 18 chicken farmers. Notably, Mr. Kien has invested in a 900m2 barn to raise 9,000 Deo Le bantam chickens. Mr. Kien said that the Deo Le bantam chicken brand is collectively owned by Que Son district.

However, in recent times, many places have been selling products other than Deo Le bantam chicken, which has greatly affected this brand. Therefore, raising chickens, connecting with people and producing canned products are steps in the journey to build customer trust in the Deo Le bantam chicken brand.

“Currently, the cooperative produces a maximum of 1,000 - 1,500 canned products per day. When the market stabilizes, we will invest in modern machinery with larger capacity.

With a total flock of 37,000 chickens, the cooperative is fully capable of supplying large orders of canned food. In addition, the cooperative is researching to can many other agricultural products and local specialties, helping people stabilize output and increase income," said Mr. Kien.
