Since New Year's Eve 1923, when engineer AG Dryland AG Dryland climbed onto the roof opposite the British Parliament to record the New Year's bell ringing event, live broadcasting of this event has become an annual tradition and continues to this day, according to AFP today, December 31.
The unmistakable chimes of Big Ben have long played an important role in the lives of the people of the foggy land.
Big Ben chimes twice a day, at 6pm and midnight, and on Sundays it chimes a total of three times.
The chimes are so important that they still ring out occasionally during the five-year restoration and repair work that began in 2017.
Big Ben will also chime when Britain leaves the European Union in 2021 and during the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
After a week of testing, the British national pride clock finally returned to normal operation last November.
Completed in 1859, the structure was originally known as the Clock Tower, housing Big Ben and its five bells, before being renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012.
