Myanmar Earthquake: Vietnamese in Thailand Still in Shock

(NLDO) - Many Vietnamese people living in Thailand were shocked when witnessing the strong earthquake in Myanmar seriously affecting Thailand.

Ms. Nguyen Quynh Chi, a Vietnamese living and working in the capital Bangkok, anxiously recounted the obvious effects of the strong earthquake that occurred in Myanmar with aftershocks reaching all the way to Thailand.

Previously, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was near Mandalay City - Myanmar and the earthquake occurred at around 12:50 (local time) on March 28.

According to Ms. Chi, the earthquake has stopped but people are still gathering in large numbers on the streets. In some areas, residents of large buildings have been allowed to return inside, but in many other places, elevators are still temporarily suspended to ensure safety.

People rushed to withdraw money from supermarkets and buy food to stock up. The hardest hit area was the capital Bangkok, especially in Din Daeng district.

Chi said the Vietnamese community here was extremely panicked. Many people rushed out without taking their identification papers or money and were still wandering the streets. She described the police force being mobilized to the maximum on the streets to support the people.

Traffic jams also occurred everywhere, all roads were seriously congested. Many high-rise buildings with swimming pools on the top were broken, causing further concern for residents.

Ms. Chi said that the Thai Prime Minister has asked the Ministry of Interior to declare a state of emergency in Bangkok and warn the whole country to be on guard against earthquake aftershocks in the next 24 hours.

The Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand also recommends that Vietnamese citizens pay special attention to ensuring safety during this time.
