A 7.4-magnitude earthquake shook a large area of ​​western Japan's coast on January 1, with a major tsunami warning issued in Ishikawa Prefecture, the Mainichi Shimbun reported.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) determined that there was a 7.4 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter 10 km deep about 42 km from Anamizu town (Ishikawa prefecture), accompanied by two large aftershocks with magnitudes of 6.2 and 5.2 in the area.

According to Asahi TV, a 3-meter tsunami warning was issued for areas in Yamagata, Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, and Hyogo prefectures. Additionally, a 1-meter tsunami warning was issued for western Hokkaido, Aomoro prefecture, and many other areas.

Bullet train services in central-eastern Japan are suspended following the earthquake, Kyodo news agency reported.

According to NHK, waves over 1 meter high hit the coast of Wajima city in Ishikawa province.
