According to the Institute of Geophysics, the earthquake occurred at 3:09 PM, with its epicenter located in Muong Lai commune, Luc Yen district, bordering Bac Quang district, Ha Giang province.
Residents in Muong Lai and many other communes in Luc Yen district heard an explosion underground, the ground shook, and furniture rattled for about 3 seconds. Many people ran out of their homes, observing their surroundings to assess the impact.

In some communes of Ham Yen district ( Tuyen Quang province ), and Bac Quang and Quang Binh districts (Ha Giang province), people also clearly felt the tremors and heard the explosions.
Currently, no damage has been reported by local authorities due to the earthquake. The Institute of Geophysics has also assessed the natural disaster risk at level 0.

Earlier on April 27, a magnitude 4 earthquake, with a focal depth of approximately 10 km, occurred in Yen Lam commune, Ham Yen district, Tuyen Quang province.
According to the Institute of Geophysics, the earthquake occurred in the area between the Lo River and Chay River faults. The Lo River fault is over 650 km long, extending from Bac Quang (Ha Giang) through Tuyen Quang. Many earthquakes of magnitude 4-4.9 have occurred along the fault, with a predicted maximum magnitude of 5.1-5.5.
