The ceremony to worship the founder of the bird's nest profession is held at the Ancestor Temple, Bai Huong village, Cu Lao Cham, Hoi An city. The ceremony is conducted according to traditional rituals, worshiping the ancestors, praying for peace, and worshiping the founder of the profession. The festival lasts for 2 days, on the 10th and 11th of the 3rd lunar month, with folk games attracting a large number of people and tourists to participate.
Mr. Staphane, a French citizen, was very excited to learn about the traditional culture of the people of Cu Lao Cham for the first time through the Yen Ancestor Worship Ceremony.
“Lighting incense, I feel the connection between the ancients and today’s generation on this beautiful island. Although I cannot fully appreciate the meaning of your traditional ritual, I think this is a meaningful activity for the younger generation to remember the great contributions of their ancestors, and continue to preserve and develop the precious assets of this place,” said Mr. Staphane, a French national.
The Ancestral Temple of the Bird's Nest Industry in Bai Huong Village, Cu Lao Cham, Hoi An City was built in the 19th century to worship the Ancestral Temple of the Bird's Nest Industry and the guardian deities of the industry. In the worshiping ceremony, today's generation remembers the great contributions of their ancestors to the bird's nest exploitation industry, prays for a year of bountiful exploitation, and raises awareness of protecting the rare natural resources of the Cu Lao Cham sea area.
Mr. Cao Van Nam, Director of the Management and Exploitation Board of Cu Lao Cham Bird's Nest Hoi An, said that the Bird's Nest Ancestor Worship Ceremony has been held for more than 150 years, and has become a traditional ritual of the protectors and exploiters of bird's nests on Cu Lao Cham Island: "Praying for peace and wishing that the bird's nest industry will develop more and more on this island, that more and more birds will gather on the island, and that the brothers in the profession will be more and more successful."
Immediately after the ceremony to worship the founder of the bird's nest industry, the Cu Lao Cham Bird's Nest Exploitation Management Team began the first bird's nest exploitation of the year and will continue to exploit the second phase around the 8th lunar month. Cu Lao Cham swiftlets mainly nest in small ravines in Ca cave, To Vo cave, Tai cave, Kho cave, Trang cave and Ky Chau cave on Cu Lao Cham island.
