Ethnic minorities in Kon Tum province change from a Movement

After 3 years of implementing the Campaign "Changing the thinking and working methods of ethnic minorities, helping ethnic minorities to escape poverty sustainably", Kon Tum province has had more than 15 thousand poor and near-poor households of ethnic minorities (accounting for more than 74.61%) change their thinking, no longer waiting for and relying on the support and assistance of the State, but self-reliant to escape poverty with their own internal strength.

Ethnic minorities in Sa Thay district have converted their model from growing cassava to growing passion fruit for high economic efficiency.

Implementing Conclusion No. 08-KL/TU, dated February 24, 2021 of the Standing Committee of Kon Tum Provincial Party Committee on the policy of implementing the Campaign "Changing the thinking and working style of ethnic minorities, helping ethnic minorities to rise up and escape poverty sustainably" (Campaign) in the area, up to now, many villages and hamlets have effectively implemented civilized lifestyles in weddings, funerals, festivals, gradually abandoning backward customs, practices, and superstitions that affect the economy, health and environment.

Many households have realized the important role of raising and educating their children, voluntarily sending their children to school, participating in cultural supplementary classes, eliminating illiteracy, implementing the population and family planning policy well, gradually changing the way of working and producing, boldly innovating the way of doing business, applying science and technology to production, converting the structure of crops and livestock to suit the land conditions and production organization capacity of the family, knowing how to spend reasonably to accumulate investment capital for reproduction...

The campaign has been actively participated by the entire political system, all classes of people, especially ethnic minorities , agreed and responded, achieving results, such as: The campaign's propaganda, mobilization and dissemination work has been implemented synchronously, regularly and continuously, with diverse and rich contents and forms. The work of building advanced typical models, especially models of helping each other to do business, has been focused on, the whole province has built and maintained 866 models of supporting each other to do business, renovating and improving mixed gardens, protecting the environment, propagating and disseminating laws...; attracting 23,636 ethnic minorities to participate (including 6,737 poor households, 3,858 near-poor households). The above models have mobilized over 96 billion VND.

The targets on the number of poor and near-poor ethnic minority households changing their thinking, gradually abandoning backward customs; knowing how to apply science and technology in production; having improved material and spiritual life; participating in cooperatives and cooperative groups all met and exceeded the set targets. In 2023, 5,549 poor households and 2,654 near-poor households of ethnic minorities escaped poverty.

From 2021 to present, Sa Thay district has implemented the construction of 61 models with a total cost of nearly 10 billion VND; 1,416 ethnic minority households have participated in the model (including 385 poor households and 299 near-poor households); 409 households have participated in the 542-hectare production forest planting project. The construction and creation of favorable conditions for ethnic minority households to participate in economic development models, typically: the model of raising striped melon pigs for reproduction; the model of growing DoNa durian according to VietGap; the model of growing macadamia in specialized cultivation and intercropping with coffee, etc.

In particular, the mixed garden renovation model has helped the district's fruit tree area increase from 285.4 hectares in 2020 to 1,570 hectares in 2023, durian alone increased from 35 hectares to more than 666 hectares. The issuance of 2 growing area codes for durian (area is nearly 31 hectares/2 households in the area of ​​​​Ya Ly and Sa Nghia communes), the output of about 350 tons is the result of the drastic participation of the entire political system and the remarkable efforts of the people of Sa Thay district; creating favorable conditions for product consumption... contributing to the effective implementation of poverty reduction work of the district.

After 3 years, 2,741 households have escaped poverty and 1,285 households have escaped near-poverty; 2,767 households know how to apply science and technology; 2,741 households have improved their material and spiritual lives; 269 households have joined cooperatives. In the whole district, 38/38 villages of ethnic minorities have completed the construction of village covenants and conventions; 100% of villages have added propaganda and mobilization content to mobilize people to eliminate bad customs and practices that are no longer suitable to village covenants and conventions for implementation; 16/38 traditional communal houses have been restored, repaired and upgraded (roofed with traditional thatched roofs), with a total cost of nearly 1.8 billion VND from the district budget, socialization and over 3,000 working days of participating people.

Passion fruit growing model brings high economic efficiency to ethnic minorities in Sa Thay district.

Visit Ms. Y Dum's garden (Ho Moong commune, Sa Thay district) when she is renovating the garden, stretching vines to grow passion fruit. Ms. Y Dum said that her family used to grow cassava for a harvest of about 20 million VND/year but it was very unstable, prices fluctuated, until she switched to growing coffee, her income was twice as high and more stable. Up to now, she has decided to intercrop durian in the coffee garden and grow passion fruit to boost the family's economic development.

“I was encouraged by the staff to plant fruit trees, so I decided to grow durian. The staff gave me very specific instructions on durian growing techniques, from consulting, instructions on how to plant, how to care for, to harvesting, so my family is very confident in investing in changing the crop structure,” Ms. Y Dum added.

Kon Tum Provincial People's Committee commended the collectives at the 3-year review conference of the Campaign.

In order for the Campaign to be increasingly effective, Kon Tum Provincial Party Committee determined that in the coming time, it is necessary to regularly propagate and mobilize to raise awareness of cadres, party members and people of all walks of life about the Campaign; in which, the team doing propaganda, mobilization, and consulting work must have knowledge, understanding of customs and practices, and perseverance and enthusiasm for ethnic minorities. Integrate and effectively use resources from national target programs and support from organizations and individuals to provide initial support for poor and near-poor households who are ethnic minorities to implement economic development production models.
