Kate is a major festival of the year for the Cham people following Brahmanism in Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan, taking place in early July of the Cham calendar this year (October 1 and 2 of the Gregorian calendar). With its unique cultural values, the Kate Festival is increasingly attracting domestic and foreign tourists to participate.
Ready for the festival
Bau Truc Pottery and My Nghiep Weaving are two traditional craft villages of the Cham people, in Phuoc Dan town, Ninh Phuoc district, Ninh Thuan province, where many tourists come to visit and buy traditional products as souvenirs during holidays and Tet.
Ms. Dong Thi My Tien, owner of My Tien pottery, said that for over a month now, her family has mobilized all their staff to make many products to serve tourists attending the upcoming Kate festival. During the Kate festival, they make more to sell to tourists. The spirit now is to clean the house and the display area to prepare to welcome visitors, Ms. Tien said.
In recent days, representatives of Phuoc Dan town's unions have actively promoted the Cham people to repair their houses, hang national flags, and clean up village streets and alleys to prepare to welcome guests during the Kate festival.

Mr. Dang Chi Quyet, Party Cell Secretary and Head of Bau Truc Quarter Management Board, Phuoc Dan Town, Ninh Phuoc District, Ninh Thuan Province, said: "Preparations for the Kate Festival, on the local side, the first preparation is environmental sanitation, mobilizing all departments, branches, organizations, youth, and students to clean up the environment. In addition, craft village people increase the production of products to introduce to serve customers."
According to Mr. Thanh Nhay, Deputy Director of Ninh Thuan Provincial Museum, the unit also proactively serves tourists during the Kate Festival. In order to promote and introduce to domestic and foreign visitors, the unit also proactively performs the following tasks: First, adjust and restore the exhibition room on the two towers: Po Rome and Po Klaong Garai, to bring typical Cham artifacts, heritages, and national treasures to serve tourists. Mr. Nhay said.

Like Cham villages in Ninh Thuan, in recent days, Cham villages in Binh Thuan have also been busy preparing for the Kate Festival.
On the road leading from National Highway 1A to Po Nit Temple, through Binh Hieu Village, Phan Hiep Commune, Bac Binh District, as well as at the entrance to Po Sah Inư Tower on Ba Nai Hill, Phu Hai Ward, Phan Thiet City, flags, streamers and banners with the words: "Welcome Kate Festival 2024" were hung. Local youth union members were also mobilized to clean up the environment.

At Po Nit temple and Po Sah Inu tower, cultural and artistic activities to celebrate the Kate festival began on the morning of October 1, including: exhibitions associated with performances of pottery, brocade weaving, traditional culinary culture; "Reading culture corner" activities; introducing images of Cham culture, Kate festival and Binh Duc Cham pottery art by video; musical instrument performances and Cham folk song and dance exchanges...

Mr. Ba Sinh Ty, a member of the art troupe at Po Sah Inư tower, is repairing equipment to prepare to welcome Cham people to the tower to perform the ceremony. He excitedly said: "I am repairing a cart to prepare to carry the sound system to the tower to welcome Kate. Every year, before the Kate festival, the brothers in the art troupe performing at the tower also spend time repairing equipment to serve our people as well as tourists during the festival."
According to Mr. Tran Duc Dung, Head of the Po Sah Inư Tower Relic Management Board, in addition to the ceremony and festival, this year's Kate festival also includes a ceremony to announce and display the national treasure Linga made of gold discovered at Po Dam Tower, Phu Lac Commune, Tuy Phong District (recognized by the Prime Minister as a national treasure - batch 12, 2023).

In addition, the golden Linga and some Cham cultural artifacts will be displayed during the Kate festival for visitors to visit and enjoy, thereby contributing to promoting the national treasure of the golden Linga as well as the Cham culture in Binh Thuan. Up to this point, the preparation work for the Kate festival has basically been carried out according to the plan and content, and now we are just waiting for the day to welcome people back to organize the festival. Mr. Dung added.
On this occasion, many organizations and businesses located in the area have carried out many volunteer activities to share and encourage difficult circumstances in the community, helping people to be excited and happy to welcome the traditional New Year of the nation.

Kate is an occasion to commemorate the gods and kings who have made many contributions and are respected by the people; to commemorate ancestors and pray for national peace and prosperity, favorable weather and bountiful crops.
With its unique cultural values, the Kate Festival is increasingly attracting a large number of domestic and foreign tourists. Currently, the Cham people of Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces are ready for the Kate Festival 2024.
