(CLO) US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching a trade deal with China after a conversation with President Xi Jinping last week.
In an interview with Fox News on the evening of January 23, Mr. Trump emphasized that the conversation with Mr. Xi went smoothly and constructively. "Everything went well. It was a good and friendly conversation," Mr. Trump shared.
Asked if he could strike a fair trade deal with China, Trump confidently said: "I can do it."
The two leaders discussed a range of issues, from trade and fentanyl to concerns about TikTok and the situation in Taiwan, in a positive sign for bilateral relations between the world's two largest economies. Mr. Trump said the two sides pledged to work together to create "a more peaceful and safer world."
Mr Trump also mentioned tariffs as a powerful negotiating tool, although he hoped they would not be needed. “We have a very powerful tool with China, and that is tariffs. They don’t want to use them, and I don’t want to use them, but it’s a very powerful tool,” Mr Trump said.
The call took place on January 17, days before Trump was inaugurated for a second term. Xi Jinping expressed hope for a “good start” in relations with Trump and that the two countries could work together to resolve important issues.
However, the US and China are embroiled in a series of diplomatic and economic disagreements, including growing technological and military competition, a bitter trade dispute and national security concerns.
